Web Design "Packages" - 8/9/2008 21:40:41
A local Computer Store that also provides ISP/Hosting/Domain Reg. etc. has asked me to quote for different size websites that they can include in packages and then contract me to do the web design component.

I'm happy to do this and have spent the weekend so far working out what would be and wouldn't be included in different size "packages" but one thing I'm wondering about is this.

I've gone for the pizza sizes, small, medium, large and extra large, meaning small is up to 5 pages, medium is up to 15 pages, large is up to 50 pages and extra large is over 50 pages.

What if a client decides that as their site has 40 pages, that they'll have a "large" has the 40 page site designed, all paid etc, and then comes back with 5 more pages to add to the site later, saying that they paid for 50 pages and only used up 40?

Has anyone had to contend with that before?

i think i would just keep it simple and say that any pages after the site has been finalised are charged at a normal maintenance rate - whether they used up their page quote already or not.

otherwise you have to keep track of the pages and work out separate a separate page rate and then they come and want a form or other 'fancy' thing (other than a plain content page) added they they didn't 'need' before but would now be included within their original page quota.

incidentally what maintenance options are there? are the sites CMS or simply simply added to from the site template?

No CMS and I know that the guy who I spoke to just assumes that there will be maintenance work. I'm not entirely sure that he knows that a lot of sites include CMS now.

I've included a maintenance package also and have included:

Updating pages with new information
Adding new pages and updating navigation
Removing outdated information
Checking for broken external links
Checking for ongoing web standards and accessibility compliance
Ongoing search engine optimization

then i would keep the cut off point: that when the site is finished, it's finished whether the page quote has been completely filled or not, and then charge maintenance for anything after that. (and make that clear in the details)

still i'm sure that jaybee and tailslide and t'others maybe have a more informed opinion as i i'm only a lowly occasional freelancer and i'm no businessman! :)

In 2004 and 2005 we built over 600 sites. By the end of 2005 we couldn't keep up with the maintenance requests. Now we charge a base price and increase price by included component. All sites have CMS and customer approved design. Add ons include WIKI (simple change to CMS); Blog; Forum; shopping carts in various complexities. All new sites have sql insertion protection; Ajax validation; and CAPTCHA on forms.

I give clients the option - basic site and then they can buy a chunk of my time to maintain that or have the add-on of either a full CMS or an editable page (depending on the usage).

I tell them that if they think they'll only make one or two changes a year then it's more cost effective to go for the static site that I'll change for them but if they want to make regular changes go for the dynamic options.

For some customers they'd prefer to pay up and avoid the hassle themselves.

As for whether they need less pages than your basic package allows for - tough. That's the price. If it's a case of one or two simple text pages then I might do it for them within the cost at a later stage. Frankly - it's worth the goodwill and would probably take 10 minutes to do. If you're talking about 10 pages then that'd be a different matter...
