Sony DVD's - Bad Choice? - 8/14/2008 11:39:25
I vaguely recall reading sometime ago Sony getting negative press because their (blank?) DVD's contained malware/spyware.

I bought a 100 DVD+R disc spindle at Staples today for $22.00 U.S which was less than half the price of the comparable number of Memorex or HP discs priced at $55.00 U.S. and $59.00 U.S., respectively. Now I'm wondering why the disparity in pricing. Are these Sony discs inferior in quality/reliability and/or contain nasty stuff? Or, have I just made sniffed-out a bargain? Google = no help.

Thoughts/comments appreciated :)

Sounds like a bargain to me but the true test is in the recording and playback. Try one, do a video, make a DVD and play it on your computer AND your stand alone DVD player and report back to us.

I've not heard of it on their blank DVD's, but a couple years ago they had a rootkit on their DVD's or CDs for movies or music. Not sure if maybe that is what you were referring to.

This was it. Couldn't remember if it applied to blank DVD's as well. Thanks!

Field testing next which will have to wait until Netflix resolves distribution problems :)

Larry,

Even if the blank cds/dvds had the sony root kit, your AnyDVD program would stop it from doing anything. :)

That, and lets face it, they'd be breaking the law as a blank dvd with a rootkit on it ain't a blank dvd ;)

Put the Sony DVD+R's thru the litmus test earlier today. All three movies copied to/played back from (see www.slyfox.com) them checked-out fine.

Sometimes, it seems, you can get more than you paid for :)
