Early on after downloading perform "Create Bootable Rescue Media" - see the Tools dropdown menu. For the hundreds of doubters out there, here's the voice of (painful) first hand experience coming at ya: IT'S NOT IF, IT'S WHEN

Do they use an industry standard format? I couldn't find that. When evaluating backup hardware and software, I think in terms of being able to recover a file seven or eight years from now. If the company or the backup program isn't around anymore, can another product read the backup media?

Having contended with the necessity (and anxiety) of Acronis Full-System Restore on three (3) occasions, I can tell you it's proprietary. The system restore function is activated by an Acronis boot disk which only looks at the stored (I use an external hard drive) .tib proprietary backup files - it doesn't need to access the actual Acronis program itself. With that said, there's no reason why the restore function wouldn't work "seven or eight years from now". I can't imagine such a scenario since operating systems will have changed several times between now and then. If on the other hand, you may want to recover old files, which assumes they would be compatible with future systems and programs (a big assumption), the process outlined above should work nicely.
