Has anyone tried Eric Meyer's CSS Sculptor? - 8/20/2008 19:43:16
I'm having a heck of a hard time transitioning from FP to EW and don't have a lot of time to devote to learning it. I came across some info on a program called Eric Meyer's CSS Sculptor by WebAssist. It *seems* like it would make the process of designing sites and applying/changing CSS layouts and styles very simple (well, simpler than without it) but I can't find any reviews of the product other than from people selling it (which kind of blows their credibility). Anyone here use this program? Any good? Worth the $50?

I got it when trying the beta version of Expression Web 2 as a freebie but tbh I haven't used it, just had a quick look at it before the beta trial ended however it did appear to work with EW, but you do need to know your way around CSS. I would think that it would be a good learning tool though because it is not a 'writer' like Stylemaster.

I've got it, use it and I like it. The software saves me time getting the basic CSS code written. I then am ready to start tweaking and adding to the code.

ORIGINAL: jaybee I've tried several different CSS 'writers' and they're OK to an extent but to be honest you still need to understand what CSS does and how. UGH ... that's what I'm worried about! quote:
There are a number of the editors around with trials. Check out a few of these Thanks for that list (I would never have thought to Google CSS editor ... didn't know there were such creatures! quote:
And if I'm not mistaken, Eric's software is meant to be used with Dreamweaver. Actually, now there's a EW version: http://www.webassist.com/professional/products/productdetails.asp?PID=152

I have it and I think it's worth exactly the $50.00. It is just great for Expression Web. It writes transparent, structured and commented code - if you like that kind of thing - and measurements can be in pixels, ems, percentages, inches, cm, etc. etc. or mixtures thereof. The .css generated is easy to follow and edit and is a solid and stable jumping off point into your own .css esoterica! It also makes up additional css for printing as well - a nice touch. You cannot bring a style sheet, per se, back in to EM's css editor but, if you saved your Style sheet as a Template when first generated then you can reload the Template. I.e. You can make your own Templates! Also, the included templates are a mix of fixed, elastic, liquid and hybrid. Nice! Again, it's worth exactly the $50.00. It saves hours and hours of time and teaches you to write better .css code too. The licensing appears to be a bit weird and, in addition, in perhaps a fit of webassist over zealousness or, maybe the old (when beginning troubleshooting analyses) 'user error' issue - I find that it only works for one user profile on my PC. You also do get two free troubleshooting incidents included with the price. I started to use one of my incidents on a Friday night of a Holiday weekend and, had not received a reply by Monday night - when I cancelled the incident and it got credited back to my pool. Anyways, you can't go wrong buying it for the $50.00 if you dabble around with websites and templates.

I just bought Sculptor last night and was up all night playing with it. I ran into lots of problems but I am a dummy so just learning to do this wothout FP 2003. I was trying to look at this web design layout http://expression-web-tutorials.com/ and make a similar layout with sculptor but wow I have much to learn. I am still not finished with it. It is a good learning tool thought as the comments tell you why and how the css works.

ORIGINAL: bbigham I'm having a heck of a hard time transitioning from FP to EW and don't have a lot of time to devote to learning it. I too was having a heck of a time transitioning from FP to EW. In fact, I almost gave up. I downloaded the free version of EW, had no clue but I knew I needed to up my game or get out. The only CSS I knew was basically how to control the text and H1, H2's... After the trial ended, I bought EW. There were not many online tutorials and being self taught in web design, it was like starting over. Aurgh! I eventually started messing with EW templates and the DWT's, I still had no idea how they were building these sites. But I finally saw one tutorial that helped me advance my skills...."style application" MAKE SURE ITS IN MANUAL, NOT AUTO! This setting lets you change the styles in design view which will change the external CSS without adding extra code to the DWT. This setting changed everything for me. I bought and downloaded Mikes CSS scupltor about a month ago. I think its great, but you do need to know some css to make it work. Basically, it creates the outline of the page for you, then you need to style the individual sections of that page manually. This is where knowledge of CSS comes into play. I am in the process of converting my legacy sites to the CSS, I used mikes layouts to convert this site and this site . It took a little time, but it was worth the effort. From one frontpage convert to another, stick with it, you will find that building your websites with EW using dwts and CSS will be a much more satisfying experience and your client will be that much happier. my 2 cents

Webassist just now came out with the 1.04 version of Sculptor. Also, as of the middle of the month Webassist decided to focus on the PHP and MySQL path and drop support for Classic ASP and Coldfusion. All in all, probably all good moves. Just an FYI.
