Using EW with FP extensions - bad idea? - 8/26/2008 15:08:50
I am finally making the transition from FP to EW and the progress is VERY slow. I tried to place a form on my EW page and found that the only way I could get it to email me the results was to have my server install FP extensions. This also seemed to simplify the publishing process and give me a few other options that I didn't have without the extensions. However -- ignoring for the moment the real possibility that many servers will be dropping extensions in the near future -- are there any other drawbacks or concerns about running EW with FP extensions just to get a few added benefits? Should I cut the FP cord entirely and learn to do without ANY FP extension features? OR ... can I safely continue "cheating" a little now while I continue to learn EW? What do you think?

You can continue to use FP includes but there may be others as well when FP extensions go away.. Here's a list of those that will fail when the extensions are not enabled. http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/m-96938/tm.htm

I'd say always move forward. No point in deliberately building in redundancy to a website. There are better solutions for forms, galleries, pretty much everything out there. One day (not too long from now) your hosts will probably stop supporting FP and you'll have to find alternative hosting or alternative scripting solution. Experience has taught me that these sorts of time-consuming jobs will always heave into view when you have the least time to do them!
