Favorite list issue? - 8/29/2008 17:57:56
Okay, I am new at this so please bare with me. I've created a website that requires a user name and password. After they log in they are supposed to agree or disagree to the terms. The site is set up so that no matter what page they are on the http address is always the agreement page address. I did this so when they bookmark it, they will always have to agree to the terms. This works great on a Mac in Safari or Firefox when I bookmark it I always end up at the agreement page. But when I add it to my PC's favorites list in IE7, I end up on which ever page I marked as my favorite, even though the http address is the one for the agreement page. I'm not sure what to do at this point?

How have you set up the http address as always being the agreement page? It sounds like there's something in IE7 that's overuling whatever script you're using to do that, and to be honest it's never a good idea to try and mess with or overule a users settings on their machine. If I was visiting a website and I wanted to bookmark a particular piece of information, even if it was information I needed to be logged in to view, I'd expect my browser to bookmark that specific page so I didn't have to go hunting around for the information the next time I needed it.

Personally I wouldn't worry about it. If users have to log into the site each time they visit, then after they've logged in they're going to gets the terms page anyhow - you can make sure that they can't go directly to any content they need to be logged in to see by using server side scripting to check the referrer headers or use cookies and a script to check for the presence of the relevant cookie to make sure they're a logged in user. How you do that depends on your server setup and which scripting language you're using.
