Image Upload Software - 9/4/2008 4:55:57
I have a need to allow users to upload images. I would like to allow users to reference images in their posts on my forum. I would like the users to create a folder using their username and then upload their images to that folder. They could then reference their images in their posts. The forum that I use is Snitz. Am I looking for something that doesn't exist? Cheers Steve

In general, the way this is done is to upload the images into a folder and the path to the image into a database. Then you can call the image back to the page. Here is the full code (heavily commented) and database and even some bonus pages for our "upload to folder" application. With these few ASP pages you can (1) browse your files for an image/file (2) name the image/file (3) upload it into a folder on your web site AND write the image/file information to a database (4) On a "show me" database results page you can -- view the image/file; a link to the image/file; the path to the image/file; etc. There is no limit to what you can do with this application on your web site. http://www.texaswebdevelopers.com/examples/uploadtofolder/uploadtofolder.zip Feel free to alter this for your own use. As is usual--By downloading this software application you automatically accept the warranty exclusion and limitation of liability which appears below. Warranty Exclusion You agree that this software is a non-commercially developed program that may contain "bugs" (as that term is used in the industry) and that it may not function as intended. The software is licensed "as is". TexasWebDevelopers makes no, and hereby expressly disclaims all, warranties, express, implied, statutory, or otherwise with respect to the software, including noninfringement and the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. Limitation of Liability In no event will TexasWebDevelopers be liable for any damages, including loss of data, lost profits, cost of cover, or other special, incidental, consequential, direct or indirect damages arising from the software or the use thereof, however caused and on any theory of liability. This limitation will apply even if TexasWebDevelopers has been advised of the possibility of such damage. You acknowledge that this is a reasonable allocation of risk. O.K.? The code works great and, although I'd love to visit personally with everyone who downloads this bit, PLEASE don't call me or eMail me if you are having trouble installing this bit. This example is to help folks learn something new. Have fun. We do not and will not provide any support services for this code unless y'all want to pay us the going rate. The exception is this thread starter.

I'm not familiar with Snitz, but some forums, if they don't have it built-in by default may have a mod you can add on. I use SMF, and attachments are a standard feature on SMF (you can specify the allowed type of files that can be attached, including image files), and images automatically appear as thumbnails in a user's posts. Probably your best source of advice is Snitz's support forums, if they have one (most forum software does), and ForumMatrix can be used to compare the features of different forum systems. I've just had a quick look at the Snitz site though, and it doesn't look as though it's got that many features, and it looks as though there aren't many mods available for it. Unless you can find someone who's willing to create an upload mod for you, I think you'd have to look at alternative systems that have an upload facility built-in if you want that sort of feature integrated with your forum.

I believe that Snitz forums disallow image upload for security reasons - at least they used to.
