Windows Media Files for Apple/Mac - 9/5/2008 11:49:13
My software for editing and creating video files for display on the internet only produces WMV files. The quality is good and file sizes are reasonable for my purposes.

I use a javascript method for listing multiple files and playing on an embedded player within the webpage. Example: Embed Windows Media Player with Javascript

And I know that if the user does not have Windows Media Player installed on their machine, they cannot view the videos.

I do not have access to an Apple/Mac, but only once a few months ago. I used that opportunity to see how some of my sites looked. The wmv files played, but the embedded player was not there on the screen and video play was a bit choppy.

I found the following downloads and was curious how they worked:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/windowsmediaplayerformacosx.html
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/flip4mac.mspx

Can someone with an Apple/Mac see if one of the above downloads allows the embedded videos on the above example page to work properly.

Any help checking this is appreciated.

Ed

I get the "you need a plugin" sign and nothing else without the plugin but I don't want any MS stuff polluting my mac! To be honest I once tried to download those files but for whatever reason it wouldn't actually install so I gave up.

I've found that Flash is the best format for this sort of thing - keeps filesizes down and more people have the plugin (provided it's not the very latest one).
