How to add a search function to site - 9/6/2008 16:43:09
I am working on a new site -- my first in Expression Web -- and I want to add a search function. It is a book review site and I want visitors to be able to search for a book title, author, keyword, etc., much as one does on Amazon.com. I never used the search function in FrontPage so at least I don't have to "unlearn" anything. Does anyone have any recommendations as to the best way to do this -- buy a third party program? Incorporate my own script? Use something in EW that I haven't noticed yet? Since I haven't yet started doing anything much on the site, I figure this is a good time to figure this out so I don't have to re-do anything later on. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Barbara

If you have PHP on your server then I'd recommend Sphider - it's a really powerful free search engine script. At the most basic level you could include a Google search box which searches the site or Google - it's not "pretty" but it's simpler to install.

Thanks, tailslide! I'll give that oddly named Sphider a look. You're right about it being a bit on the ugly side but I love the price<G>

Thanks, rdouglass, but believe me when I tell you I *definitely* am a newbie at this. Want more proof? It took me a couple of minutes just to figure out what "js" meant! After I got your message, I did a bit more reading and I see I have my work cut out for me. This may be one of those tasks best left farmed out to a pro, until I can learn more. In the meantime, though, thanks for the advice. If nothing else, it led me to several sites with nifty little "js" snippets for other things.
