How to add a search function to site - 9/6/2008 16:43:09
I am working on a new site -- my first in Expression Web -- and I want to add a search function. It is a book review site and I want visitors to be able to search for a book title, author, keyword, etc., much as one does on Amazon.com.

I never used the search function in FrontPage so at least I don't have to "unlearn" anything.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to the best way to do this -- buy a third party program? Incorporate my own script? Use something in EW that I haven't noticed yet?

Since I haven't yet started doing anything much on the site, I figure this is a good time to figure this out so I don't have to re-do anything later on.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Barbara

If you have PHP on your server then I'd recommend Sphider - it's a really powerful free search engine script. At the most basic level you could include a Google search box which searches the site or Google - it's not "pretty" but it's simpler to install.

That doesn't necessarily mean you're a newbie. :)

Are you familiar with JS at all? If you're comfortable with JS and it's object models, Google has a very slick JS API that you can search your site (as Google sees it) and return the data in any format you want.

<disclaimer> as long as you want XML. LOL!. </disclaimer>

No, sorry didn't mean it like that but they do provide som excellent examples at various levels; from simply reformatting the data to grabbing the raw data and all the XML elements and child objects. You can put some pretty good stuff in there with just a little of copy and paste.

Actually quite powerful but you do need a JavaScript comfort level above novice to do really deep things.

Now if you want to search your site in real-time, there are various other factors involved. Is all your data in a DB? I've a Classic ASP script I built to search a DB and return the results with the search word highlighted but I haven't converted it over to .NET yet.

Anyways, the point is it may be different for your situation. As mentioned, if you have PHP running there are other options. Regardless, you ought to search for a solution in something you're comfortable with already.

Hope it helps.

Thanks, tailslide! I'll give that oddly named Sphider a look. You're right about it being a bit on the ugly side but I love the price<G>

Thanks, rdouglass, but believe me when I tell you I *definitely* am a newbie at this. Want more proof? It took me a couple of minutes just to figure out what "js" meant!

After I got your message, I did a bit more reading and I see I have my work cut out for me. This may be one of those tasks best left farmed out to a pro, until I can learn more.

In the meantime, though, thanks for the advice. If nothing else, it led me to several sites with nifty little "js" snippets for other things.
