Preserving CSS in EW - 9/10/2008 1:47:25
I'm a new EW user and have a problem. On this project we will be creating hundreds of standard documents. Each document type has its own template and each template has its own CSS.

The problem: if someone changes a style, even accidentally, it overwrites the extenal CSS. Even after making the CSS 'Read-only' a save prompt appears with "overwrite" as default.

Is it possible to prevent EW from doing this?

Isn't this what you're meant to do though? All styles should be in the external stylesheet?

I don't use EW but what I do when I have a page which a client can update via a form I don't give them the option of changing pretty much any styling. They can add lists or embolden but that's about it. That way they can't mess with the basic styling. I use TinyMCE of FCKeditor (with a stripped down toolbar) in conjunction with a small database to do this.

Greetings Supreme Overlord,

You are right. I don't want anyone to be able to change my CSS but EW makes this possible - even if the CSS isn't open. That is why I posted the question:

Is it possible to prevent EW from doing this?

Cheers
Bill

No, EW is a full editor, anyone using it can change anything. The only way you can stop it is to use a Content Managed System so your users can only change page content using a stripped down editor as Tailslide mentioned.

Either that or you tell them to only use the letter and number keys on the keyboad and that you'll remove their fingers if they don't. :)

Can you use PHP on your server? If so take a look at SnippetMaster which is a mini CMS you just plug into your web page. Users log into that and update whatever you specify.

Thank you jaybee,

That's what I was afraid of. Unfortunately, using a CMS is not an option because of the variety and complexity of our documents. Since there are only six developers, regular monitoring (and the ocassional broken finger) should prevent most changes.

Cheers
