Expression Web "automatic" code meddling - 9/16/2008 16:43:02
I've got an ASPX page I created in MS Visual Web Developer which works fine. My "head" at the top has a "runat=server" declared within it, which is necessary for various controls I have running on the page. When I switch to Expression Web and open the page with it, EW CHANGES my <head runat="server"> to just "<head> after opening the page (it does so in about a second). At first I didn't know why my page wasn't working after I'd made some other changes and saved, but then after undoing it all and comparing the two pages, I discovered this difference, and the page worked fine when I re-edited the code back the way it was in MSVWD saved and ran it.

How can I make Expression Web quit with its meddling in my code? This is especially a problem for me because we're re-designing our organization's Web site, and other staff are using EW, and if it's going to screw up the new pages every time someone opens one with it, then we're going to have to deep-six EW and I'll have to show my co-workers how to use MSVWD (most can barely handle EW).

Help!

And thanks in advance.

If you find out, I would love to know the solution. EW changes my register tags at the top which makes my pages not work (it only does this on some of my sites and not others. I've yet to see the difference or know why). I have to do my final edit with notepad to make sure my register tags are what they are supposed to be.

Well, here's the reply I got on another forum (I'm still using EW1 SP1):

"Try xWeb2. We share designer code, but one of the products has newer version. At this point VWD 2008 SP1 is the most recent version of the designer, followed by xWeb2, followed by VS 2008 RTM and xWeb+Sp1."

Guess I'll try downloading EW2 and see if it behaves differently...

Well, I downloaded and installed the xWeb2 trial version and it is exhibiting the same behavior as xWeb1, so that's not going to fix my problem...

Well, EW2 is what started my automatic changes :)

I Appreciate you posting what you've found so far!

I've posted on another forum as well, but so far there's been no definitive solution. I'll post more here if/when I have something worthwhile...

Well, so far no answers in either of the other two forums I posted in, one of which is the "official" EW board. Things aren't looking hopeful. Maybe later I'll try Googling around a bit more.

Well, after poking around on my own, the only option I can find is to go to Tools-->Application Options, and then on the "Configure Editors" tab to choose the "ASPX" extensions line, and make "Expression Web (Open as Text)" the default editor option. When I did this and then opened my ASPX file in EW, my code was not tampered with. Granted, I lose all other editing/intellisense functionality in EW this way, but I think that will have to suffice for my co-workers using EW while I myself will continue to use MSVWD to develop and maintain the site. Pity there isn't a more in-between option, but whatever.

Thanks, IW. Yeah, I like the colors, preview, and checking with the html mode. I'm gonna still need to somehow find out why it is auto changing my tags. Thanks for your info!

If you do find out, could you post it? I'd love to know too.
