Need some simple talk about starting a second web site - 9/23/2008 21:14:19
Hi,

A medicare eligible senior here, formerly a very modest FrontPage user anyhow, but I haven't developed any new skills and have just been slugging along, forgetting stuff everyday, barely keeping this My Personal Website alive.

However, recently, I got into garden railroading, My Choo-Choo and have volunteered to start a website for the club. Having forgotten virtually everything except which buttons to push to publish a photo or page, and, having "straightlined" the format, ie, everything goes into one "My Webs" folder with a bunch of .htm and .jpg files, I have one big starter question:

How do I start a second web and avoid getting it mixed in with my existing web? I ask this because I started a second web for another club previously when I lived in another city and an IT friend had to bail me out when the two web sites got confused about which one had which home page. My current site is hosted by OutFront but the RR Club will only approve funding for a different, more economical ISP for the second web site. Is having two different ISP's a problem?

I am sure I will have several other questions but I need to know at what level the two webs can be safely separated so I can start the plan.

Thanks very much for any help.

David

David,

Start with a hi-quality FrontPage Template - dozens Here. BTW, they are free :)

Choose the one you want and follow these steps:

(1) unzip the OutFront site folder - will appear in a subdirectory on C:\ Drive named "OutFrontWebs", (2) copy the site folder and paste in My Documents (FrontPage) folder, (3) rename folder to Whatever, (4) open FrontPage and browse for Whatever, (5) double click on the index.htm (html) file. Site will open in FrontPage ready for editing.

Hope this helps :)

Hi Larry,

Thanks very much for the quick reply and helpful info but I'm still a little confused. My current web (palmeter) is in this folder list:

My Documents
.....My Webs
.........._vti_cnf
.........._vti_pvt
..........palmeter

The web, of course, opens in FrontPage for editing but there is no folder called FrontPage. Does My Webs = FrontPage? Does putting a second folder with a different name in My Webs create a completely separate web with its own home page and avoid the tangle I had previously?

Thanks for your patience,
David

Moving a Site to a New Computer might help. Under the Microsoft FrontPage section, there is a link (Moving your web site from one computer to another one video tutorial for Frontpage). About 55 seconds into the video you will see how to create a new FrontPage web

Thanks again, Larry, that is an answer I can understand.

One big question that I am sure has been hashed over many times, what is the long term outlook (pun?) for FrontPage support? I am reluctant to start a new web site if FP is about to bite the dust. What is the recommended econo replacement, if necessary? This is only a hobby for me, I get NO income, just fun(?).

David

David,

Microsoft quit (tech) supporting FrontPage 2-3 years ago - Forum support, such as OutFront, has always been the best source of problem resolution in any case.

Many hosts still support FrontPage Extensions including our host, Tom Brunt. Only sites with certain component features require FPSE's so this may not be a concern for you - see http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/m-96938/tm.htm.

FrontPage, while known for generating excessive code, has proven itself to be a stable program and certainly should serve your modest needs indefinitely. Expression Web is the "successor" to FrontPage but I don't see a fit given your "hobby" approach to design.

If it's just for fun then have a look at Kompozer which is a freebie WYSIWYG editor.

Hi Larry,

Thanks again for your help to date.

I have decided to stick with FrontPage and to take your advice about the Outfront free templates. I struggled a bit but finally got the template "Shop Talk" into a new folder and have created a Home Page file for the new Club web site.

Before I sign up with the new ISP, I would like to know where I will be able to get help with questions about the template. The Forum link that was included with the template instructions is closed. My first big question will concern the creation of a password protected section in the web site. The template is more sophisticated than I, so there will be other questions.

Regards,
David

David,

Appears you've graduated from hobby to something more sophisticated :)

Follow the link below for information about Permissions:

http://www.outfront.net/tutorials_02/fp_techniques/frontpage-subwebs.htm

Also, www.bravenet.com has (or at least had) a modest subscription service fee for site visitor password access.

As to questions about the OutFront "Shop Talk" template, get back to us if you hit a snag. I'll load and publish it for you it things go past sticky on your end :)

Hi Larry,

More sophisticated? :)

Well, I guess Halloween is the time for doing scary stuff! I was proud that I made a Navigation bar for palmeter.com after two years of contemplation. Guess I'm ready for the next step(s)!! I'm glad the new web will be for a hobby group, that assures that they will be very tolerant, right? Right!

I took a look at the permissions tutorial, I will give it a try when I go live (later today, I hope).

Finally, I appreciate very much your offer to help me with the "Shop Talk" template. I hammered (using my BFH*) the home page into shape, but the links look a bit trickier.

Regards,
David

Hi Larry,

Status report -

The domain:

Model Train Club

has been registered and the ISP contracted (I'm personally still with OutFront; the Club, however, made a different choice).

So, when I get ready, in a short time I hope, to put the web up on the new ISP servers for the first time, I assume it is not just a standard publish procedure. What is different the first time? Why do you call it a "load"? How can you load my documents?

I am very willing and anxious to have some help since it has been way back in the days of steam-powered computers since I launched palmeter.com.

By the way, did I mention that I am using FrontPage 2000 to do all this? The new ISP does have FP extensions.

Thanks,
David

Tailslide, Your Supreme Overlordness, I also apologize for my tardy response to your kind suggestion. I did take a look at Kompozer and found it interesting but I am way too invested in FrontPage and not ready to delve into any more major unknowns right now. Thanks for raising that curtain, though.

David

Nothing. To make sure you get everything accross the first time, however, elect "All Pages, Overwriting Pages Already on Destination". For subsequent publishing events, change Remote Web Site Properties to "Changed Pages Only".

Tip: Be on the outlook for two index pages on the host side after initial publish. The local FrontPage index file has an extension of .htm. Frequently (but not always) the host server will automatically convert this to .html (OutFront.net does this). If, after publishing you see both index.htm and index.html files, delete index.htm file on the host side.

Hi Larry (and our 1200+ cheering lurkers!! :)

We did it! After all my worry and all your kind help, it took about 10 seconds and we gave birth to a healthy new web site:

Big Model Trains for Old Guys

The only false start was my compulsion for .com rather than .org but once I got that right it sailed right through!

Thanks again for your help on the launch, now I will delve further into the mysteries of the "Shop Talk" template.

Regards,
David

Hi Larry,

"Shop Talk" problem #1. On the "Contact" page, I assumed that all I had to do was put an email address hyperlink on the "Submit" button and that would email the filled out contact sheet to the designated email party. It isn't working.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
David

David,

Your source code shows that's just what you've done and, no, that's not right.

Follow these steps: (1) right click the Submit button, (2) left click Form Properties, (3) in the Send to E-Mail Address field enter davidATpalmeter.com, (4) Press OK and answer NO to the drop-down menu that starts with "This for cannot be configured ..... ", (5) save and (6) Publish.

I think you already know the FrontPage Component Reply Form requires Extensions.

Hope this helps :)

Whoops! Edited to mask email address :)

Thanks, Larry.

Brimming with overconfidence, I have now moved on to the previously discussed "Password Protected" web section and have found that the recommended tutorial, while well written for regular folk, is too advanced for me.

For example, I got lost right in Step 1, "Do File > Open Web > http://www.url.com > userID/pw > OK."

I did figure out that I was in FrontPage 2000 and got thru the "Do File > Open Web" commands okay but have no idea how and where to enter an http address. The "Look in:" window at the top of the box won't let me enter an http and the "Folder" box at the bottom just tells me there is no such folder.

I'm confused, this part should be simple, right?

David

Tom (The Brain) Brunt wasn't aiming his language at literal people like us - he's on a higher technical plain :)

Connect to the host server as you usually would in the publishing process using the >> File >> Publish Site commands.

When you see local and host files displayed (Ye Olde Live Site) you're ready to move on to Step 2 -- Create a New Folder.

Gratuitous Tip: Steps 3 and 4 require a "Live Site" as well :)

Sorry Larry,

This isn't working. Can you indulge me a key-by-key sequence of what I need to do. I can't seem to get to a publish screen unless I put up a page and actually send it to publish. Maybe FP 2000 needs some extra steps?

Thx,
David

Step 1 is what you've (had to do to get where you are on Big Model Trains for Old Guys ) done time after time - it's the publishing process.

In FrontPage, >>File >>Publish File. This will connect you to the host and, at that point, you'll see your files on the left (local) and the host files on the right. Then, at this point you are "Live".

I'm a 2003 user but can't imagine 2000 is appreciably different.

Larry,

Okay, used the BFH and got it through my head that you could use Publish w/o publishing. Got to Step 3 but can't find a "Server" function under "Tools". Will keep looking.

May have it done.

Could you try:

Protected?

and use
UName: Test001
PWord: Test001
to get in?

Thanks,

The page is there, which reads: "Members
This Section will have information specifically directed to the ILSR membership, such as: Your 2009 dues will be payable soon. Send them to the treasurer before the end of the year."

Page did not ask for UN/PW. Keep working on this, you'll get it :)

I have gotten through steps I and 2 twice now with no apparent problem and have created a happy, healthy subweb named "Protected". Yesterday I even got the subweb on the ISP server somehow. Today I cannot get through step 3. "Then do Tools > Server > Permissions." No place on any menu, "Tools" or any other, do I have a "Server" option.

If I try to "Publish" again, including the subweb, just to be sure I am editing the on the host, I get a "Server error" message about "can't inherit access control settings from the root web because it is missing the AuthUserFile and AuthGroupFile directives."

Yesterday was a continual backslide. Any ideas for recovery?

Thanks,
David

Hi David,

don't mean to intrude in your project but if you really want a password protected area and you are using FP, my suggestion would be to purchase this It's reliable and at $34, you can't go wrong.
