New site design - 9/26/2008 9:58:34
Hey guys,
I've created a new site deign and was wondering how it ranked with everybody. There is some filler greek text in there, so disregard that stuff.

looks very nice! :)
some points:
- why the transitional doctype and not strict?
- the logo and other text could be a bit clearer in the header - either mess with the antialising and/or duplicate that layer
- background: the orange scintillates against the blueish green - try a shade of that orange and/or use a desaturated version of it instead (it also takes too much focus away from the main area)
- resizing text a couple of notches takes it out of the divs and it's lost from view
- you need to optimise your pngs (or consider using gifs/jpegs unless necessary) (and on your tony's bbq site too! over 600k for the logo alone! nice looking though it is
otherwise it's a nice feeling site

It looks good - nice counter to those who would say that all WordPress sites look the same!
I'd definitely add a background colour to the main divs as without images you can't see the white text against the background.
Apart from that I'd remove the W3C icons - they're very ugly and unnecessary - clients won't understand them and other (good) designers would assume you'd code to those standards anyway - sort of like having a button stating that you've checked your spelling. If you see what I mean?

The PNG's are optimised now.
I guess I dont understand the difference between trans and strict doctypes.
I am working on getting the header images looking clearer, you were right about that.
i am going to convert everything to EMs as soon as I get the design aspect done.
That was a good idea about adding color to the main divs.

just noticed that you exclude people with ie6 - they don't get ANY content other than a suggestion to get a proper browser.
now while i agree people who willingly use IE6 should be shot it's not always their fault that they are browsing with something that old - maybe it's a friend's computer, or they are simply unaware of how to upgrade, or they are using a pc at a library or other place (work, say) where IT policy (or lack of!) is way behind.
i wouldn't exclude those people ;)
edit: if you're a web designer you SHOULD know which doctype to use ;)

Yes I meant to say that yesterday Dave - about IE6 users.
It's really not fair to discriminate against people - that's not your job. It may well not be their fault they're using it. Even if it is their fault. It's not hard to ensure sites work in IE6 as well as modern browsers.
