Recommend a cart - 30 products+ - 9/29/2008 0:56:04
Who/what would you recommend for a shopping cart solution to cater for approx 30 products [3 categories]. Once established there wil be about another 30 products to add over the following months. The market is the UK. The payment gateway will be PayPal. Thanks for all recoomendations/suggestions

What I would really like is a third party system that plus-into any custom design. I could custom design the category pages and the 'system' (using an inline frame perhaps?) would allow my client [without having to see code] to upload images, descriptions, prices etc which would appear on a given page. Is there anything like that?

I've used CubeCart in the past. The client can organise it how they want via the admin panel including setting up other non-product pages, images etc etc. You will need to buy a $15 plugin to display VAT properly in Paypal but it works fine. I built the custom template first and then carved it up.

Thanks Tailside - I have played with CubeCart, and from what I have seen of Zencart & OsCommerce I thought CubeCart was the easiest to use all round. However, given the relatively small number of products and the fact that the categories once established do not need to be changed I'd prefer to custom build the site design from scratch rather that customise cart templates. Also I'd rather not install a cart on my server as I like the idea of always being able to 'pick up' my sites and put them on another hosting package if ever I want/need to move. I have been investigating Roman Cart, which is perhaps one step on from using a PayPal cart. It's great that it is thrid party hosted, as I would like, but it does not integrate in a way that allows image upload for the client - you have to copy and paste the code next to images - as with using the Paypal Cart.

Yes with the simpler payment systems such as Roman Cart or Mals-ecommerce there's the requirement to get into the code unfortunately. I have seen other hosted cart solutions out there that are pretty simple but they're expensive - some are really expensive for small businesses. Some charge around $40 pm - so I guess it depends on the volume of sales and how much the client is expecting to make whether this is worth it. You could probably rig up a simple-ish database system which would allow the user to enter products into pre-set categories and upload photos and then since the paypal code (for example) is pretty much standard, you could then generate a paypal button to match automatically. To be honest though - by the time you fiddle around doing that you might as well use a cart! Wordpress has a couple of shop plugins... haven't used them (yet - probably about to) so I can't say whether it's easy to use from the client's point of view. WP is pretty portable though. I know you're not keen on installing carts but they might well be worth it - security is a big issue especially if you're trying to build a simple cart yourself. Have a look at Magneto - it's newish and seemingly popular. I had a couple of issues with coding when it first came out but haven't looked closely since.

Some charge around $40 pm Given the current US-UK exchange rate I wouldn't mind £20 pm if it was exactly what I wanted. As for rigging up a database etc, getting some php code to play with... etc... yes, it would be more trouble than it is worth and in the end still tied to the server without the flexibility of moving if needs be. Magento is a new one on me - I've been trying to look around their site (and site examples) but they all seem slow! Maybe it's just my connection but checking other stuff it seems OK !? Is it a complete 'store' package like CubeCart etc? Is it in any way different from others?
