I tried to make this a simple layout but now I'm worried it may be too plain! Any insights welcome!

Hmmm...

Yes there's something not quite pleasing to the eye... I think maybe have a play with the background image - have a different colour instead of white, maybe a subtle gradient and then the blue band on top of that.

Also, don't like the white gap join between the navigation dropshadow and the blue band. I'd have blue under the dropshadow on that side to look more realistic.

You get a horizontal scrollbar at 800px wide which you'd probably want to solve since I guess that's why the site is narrow in dimensions - to fit that sort of resolution.

Personally I don't like the H1 font - I think it's the Caps, not sure. I currently like using serif fonts quite a lot for headings etc - but I find they only look good at a reasonable size (this is aimed at the headings in the navigation bit. Usually only bigger than 150% (ish) and using normal weight fonts rather than bold. Don't ask me why! I'd also personally prefer the rest of the text to be sans-serif.

You'll want to remove this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>

It'll put IE into Quirks mode. (just checked - this is breaking the site in IE6).

I like the little loudhailer thing - I think it works well with serif headings (bigger, normal weight). They have that old-fashioned look about them (I mean that in a good way!!). Maybe a different image - something that might work with the old-fashioned look - I dunno, maybe a wireless operator or a morse-code operator in one of those westerns, you know the type of thing I mean! Or a cox yelling at a rowing eight? Something witty but fitting with the communication theme. Maybe a Newspaper look?

Oh no - I'm having ideas before 8 in the morning... I'm getting a headache!

Thanks, Tailslide. I'll try to fix it when I have time. The scrollbar must be because I increased the width of the wrapper div to avoid it breaking in IE6 - clearly it didn't work too well. I'll have to find another fix or see if there is a more optimal width.

I didn't actually make the loudhailer logo - it is from the previous frames-based site.

I'm afraid it's just a little too bland for my liking (minimalistic or plain isn't the word I'd use because with such a narrow area for the actual content the centre section looks quite cluttered - though that could be just because there's only filler text and no graphics there).

That blue band across the upper part of the page is definitely too pale really to give a feeling of continuity right across the page. Personally, as Tailslide suggested, I'd either have the background image with a gradient, or the blue band as a gradient and have that blue band darker - either as a solid colour, or a darker gradient fading to perhaps the colour is now. Part of me's thinking the blue band needs a border, but I'm not sure how that would look in reality. Like Tail said though, that gap between the drop shadow and the blue band definitely needs fixing though, especially on the left side, as it's very obvious at the moment.

Navigation also looks completely out of place on the left, it may be because of the pale background, but you might want to look at adding content underneath it as well, even if it is just links to external sites or google ads

My 2 cents:

I also wouldn't cal it minimalistic. Plain perhaps (without the offensive connotation) But then, text is quite busy. I am not too crazy about the colors either.
