RE: Can't restore to any point/slow computer as well - 10/4/2008 6:34:30
I don't know if this helps or not, but recently I had problems trying to roll back changes to previous restore points on my old laptop just before my hard drive died (not that I'm suggesting it could be your hard drive - I'm not that good with hardware stuff, so I can't really comment on that side of things). On virus scans though, I've recently had problems with my new laptop, and neither Windows Defender, NOD32 (my anti-virus) or ZoneAlarm were picking anything up, but my firewall (ZoneAlarm) was going crazy asking me repeatedly to give server permissions to various apps. I was having problems with restore points on there too, as I was having major internet connectivity problems, and it had been suggested that maybe faulty drivers were causing my problem and to try rolling back to a previous restore point. Same problem again though - looked like it was restoring and seemed to be going through the process, but nothing changed. Two things though seemed to help with the problem, or at least afterwards my problems seemed to be gone. Whether it was just co-incidence though I don't know, but may be worth a try. The first thing I did was to download and install Malwarebytes, which picked up three trojans where nothing else had found anything untoward and removed them for me (one of the administrators here has also recommended it recently). The second thing was that I found that was a BIOS upgrade for my model, and I ran that. Things have been working perfectly since then. As I said, whether it was just a coincidence, or whether one or both of them had any effect on resolving the problem I'm not sure, but it may be worth downloading Malwarebytes anyway as it's a very handy piece of kit to have, and looking into whether there's any BIOS updates for your machine (mine's a Toshiba and I'm subscribed to an email alert service for whenever any updates, drivers and such like are released for my model). A word of caution on CCleaner though. I've used CCleaner for a few years now, but over the summer cleaning up my registry, despite thinking I'd not removed anything essential, I managed to mess up my registry by being a bit too enthusiastic over what I was removing. If you made a backup of the registry settings before you cleaned it up with CCleaner, it may be worth restoring that backup version and seeing if that sorts things out. Out of interest, why are you trying to restore to a previous point? Presumably it's because you're having some sort of problem that you're thinking might have been caused by some changes you made? It might be an idea to give a little more information about the problems you've been having that might give the guys that know a lot about this sort of stuff a bit more to go on. Like I said, that's certainly not me, but I just thought I'd pass on my recent experiences in case they were of any relevance to your situation. Good luck with getting it sorted!
