Site Indexed With and Without www? - 10/16/2008 10:08:06
I'm wondering if my index page is indexed with and without the "www" and because of this I'm being penalized for duplicate content. When I individually type both versions of my site in the address bar my page is displayed with each version. I've tried this with other sites and when I don't include the www in the address bar the www is automatically added to the address bar. Also when I check backlinks in Yahoo using the two different addresses: site:www.sun... and site:sun... (without the www) I get different results from each query. Also I've noticed that three of my inner pages are listed without the www. If my index page is indexed twice then isn't that a SEO problem? If so how can I fix it? I want my site to be listed with the www. My site is sunembroideryscreenprinting.com/ Thanks!

You need to do that thru Google's WebMaster Tools. You need to sign up and verify your site if you have not. A simple single file upload does the trick. Then under the Tools menu, you can set the "preferred domain" so that all will show up under "www" (or not if you choose that way). That make sense? Hope it helps.

Got it - thanks! I didn't realize there was so much useful information in web master tools like the % position information in the top 20 queries that a site appears in.

Still, it may not guarantee that flow of incoming Page Rank will be properly assigned to your site. For better control over your Web site you should make a permanent redirect from either the non-www version to the www or vice versa. It appears that most sites choose the www version as their preferred domain.
