UK shipping & VAT quick question - 10/24/2008 9:13:32
Just a quick, I trust simple, question for those who are familiar with UK-based e-commerce...

If a seller normally charges VAT for their goods should they also charge VAT on shipping costs?

You'd think that'd be easy wouldn't you?

Here's the relevant HMR & C page: http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageVAT_ShowContent&id=HMCE_CL_000114&propertyType=document#P34_2182

Nah, I had my suspicions - I was hoping that soemone here would have the subject all sewn up!

So it says...

quote:

Postal services provided by the Post Office are exempt from VAT, but this exemption does not extend to similar services provided by other suppliers, even where this might be seen as being in direct competition with the Post Office. However, if any delivery charge you make to your own customers includes the cost of stamps you buy from the Post Office you may have to charge VAT on the whole amount including the cost of those stamps.

Therefore the answer must be "yes"... "no"... "maybe"... "best check with official sources!"

I love UK clarity :)

Yep you got it... clear as mud isn't it?!? Personally I give it to the clients and let them make up their minds. So far one charges, one doesn't...

We always charge vat on carriage because the carriers charge us vat.

We try not to use the postal system except for accessories, spares etc but we quote a price for these items delivered UK. So for accounting purposes and as far as the customer is concerned the postage is free.
