Tailslide -> Apache & .htaccess issues (10/30/2008 9:04:37)

Anyone out there an apache guru?

For reasons that are beyond me some of my clients' sites on my usual web host are having their custom .htaccess files overwritten every time apache updates itself which is having the effect of breaking the sites.

This started in September - shortly after PHP 5 was installed on the servers. Might be a coincidence.

If I use Cpanel rather than FTP to change the .htaccess file - would that help matters?

Rather irritating to have to go through changing over a dozen sites' .htaccess file everytime this happens.

Went to the Apache web site to find that answer but that website is no help. Not very user friendly either. When you do a search on that site it takes you to Google search outside that website. Google did however point to the possibility that PHP 5 may be configured to alter .htaccess files.

Hmmm... I think what I'm after is a way to tell apache to leave my custom rules alone - but I don't know if that's even possible.

My hosts (who are normally really helpful) seem a bit confused about this too. They suggest not using the custom addhandler rule and naming the pages .php - well yes, obviously I could do that - but if I'd wanted .php pages I'd have left them like that to start with!

Shouldn't be PHP runtime files causing the problem as .htaccess is part of Apache (hence why it's iffy using them on windows servers) Best bet would be to try and get your hosts to alter Apache so it doesn't touch the files, as AFAIK, one of the latest builds on Apache reinstalls everything on update, including .htaccess. To stop this it has to be manually altered. Hi-ho Server and away!

Get them hosts to do what they get paid for ;)

Aha! Thanks Gio - that's exactly what seems to be happening. I'll get back onto them as having a custom .htaccess file doesn't seem like too much to ask does it!?!

Let us know how it goes. One of my hosts is about to upgrade Apache on their servers.

I can't say I've noticed any problems with the switch-over (apart from having to alter some of my include paths, though that wasn't too bad, as we were given plenty of notice about the switch-over - I use the same host as Tail does), but then again that's maybe because I use the .php with PHP pages.

I've just tried it though, and my forum (SMF) won't use the "search engine friendly URLs" any more (that re-writes page URLs in the format "index.php/topic,1.html", rather than "index.php?topic=1.0", presumably mod_rewrite not being available or Apache screwing with .htaccess? As mod_rewrite's working fine on everything else that produces "nice" URLs, I presume it's something to do with .htaccess though. There's a .htaccess file in the forum's directory, as well as in the domain root, which was presumably put there by SMF when it installed, because it's not something I've done. It used to work okay, so I can only assume it's the upgrade that's changed something.

Oddly though, on my blog (different domain but with the same host) mod_rewrite seems to work okay, and there's the same set-up on that domain - a .htaccess file in the blog's directory, as well as in the domain root.

It would be interesting to find out what's going on with the .htaccess files though, because that may explain why I can't get the "search engine friendly URLs" on the forum. It's not an issue at the moment, but may be early next year when I start re-organising that particular site.
