how to get rid of sharepoint services? - 11/28/2008 23:32:08
Hi. I have been using Front Page 2003 since....well, probably since 2003. I have NEVER even heard of Sharepoint Services - well, I probably saw the words somewhere but they never meant anything. I have created sites with FP 2003, used FP to edit non-FP sites, uploaded to many different hosts, etc etc - without ever encountering Share Point Services. I do not know whether Share Point is useful or not, but it is creating a HUGE problem for me now. Out of the blue. My Windows crashed so I have reinstalled WIndows XP Home and FP 2003. The FP 2003 is on a disk that I had used to install on this same computer before. But NOW - when I try to open any of my existing sites, I get an error that the site cannot open because it is not a Share Point site. I have worked on these same sites hundreds of times without getting this message. I can only guess that it has to do with one of these factors below, but extensive Google searching has not helped. I hope someone here can help me. I would just like to use FP 2003 without any of these Share Point "features" since they are just problematic for me. 1. My new install of Win XP - I updated to SP3. My previous version was only SP2. 2. The files have moved - I am trying to open sites that are stored in backup files on another drive - but even when I move them to my desktop, I still get the same error message 3. virtual windows - technically, I am running Windows as a virtual OS on a Mac. But that's the same as before also so I don't see why FP would all of a sudden come up with this sharepoint stuff out of the blue. Thanks in advance for your help.

Are you trying to open the website locally or on the server?

Corey, I am simply trying to open a pre-exisiting web site created in FP and stored locally on my hard drive to make further edits in FP. I think I have resolved my issue by reinstalling Win XP but NOT updating to SP3. Now FP behaves as I expect - it opens and edits and saves files, all without demanding SharePoint Services which I do not have or want or use. It would not even open a file from a site created in FP and stored on my HD due to all these Share Point error messages. I'm not sure why all this occurred but I certainly going to avoid SP3! Thank you, Bonnie

Just copying a Frontpage website can have problems because of the meta data that is stored. One of the best ways to transfer the website is publishing. If it is a small site, you can publish the website from the server. Always create the new website locally and then you can publish. If the site is fairly large, you can create the new website on the new computer and then go to File Import and choose the files from the disk copy. This will help Frontpage to create everything that it needs to maintain the site

Thank you ,Corey, I'm not sure I am clear on this... Do you mean that if I have a site created in Frontpage in a file on computer A, and I just copy that file to computer B, then FP on computer B cannot just open that site for further editing? You mean I should instead download the site from the server to computer B? Aren't they just the same files on the server since they originally came from computer A? It didn't occur to me that this would be the issue. Bonnie

Bonnie: You're working with a lot of assumptions which, apparently, have created problems on your local drive. Corey's "publish down" recommendation seems best for your situation and is all but sure-fire. Try this: (1) In FrontPage, open your server files by clicking File >>Open, (2) Browse to “My Network Places” (3) In the File Name field type the complete web site address, for example: " http://www.yourwebsite.com", (4) Enter your username & password when prompted, (5) Once the server files open in FrontPage click File >> Publish Site and, (6) For the address to publish, enter a destination on your hard drive, for example: C:\My Documents\My Webs\mysite. (Note: if the location doesn’t exist on your hard drive, you will be prompted to “Create? Yes or No”. Answer Yes.) Last step: Republish to Host Overwriting all Files - Site will then be “In Step”

Larry and Corey, Thank you for your help. Larry, thanks for the step by step explanation. This will be quite handy. I think my initial problem was more extensive than this (though I have deleted that virtual machine so I cannot be sure) - it seemed that FP would not even open any random html file without giving me some "missing sharepoint" error message. In the past, I have always been able to use FP to open either a site created in FP or even a page or site NOT created in FP, although of course some functionality would be missing. But I will use this process going forward, it will certainly assure me that I have the most current version of my sites! Bonnie

ORIGINAL: btessler Aren't they just the same files on the server since they originally came from computer A? If you look at your Frontpage web through explorer, you will see some _vti_cnf folders. In these folders, Frontpage maintains some data to help it maintain the website. And it is very specific. Usually I see this problem when a web hosting company has just copied the Frontpage web from one server to another. Frontpage will throw up errors if this happens. The website needs to be published again through Frontpage.
