Hi All,

I’m kicking around the idea of creating an eCommerce web site and could use some direction. I have some experience with Front Page, but I’m kinda clueless as to how to proceed.

Since Front Page is going south I need something else, but what? Should I have something loaded on my PC? Should I use the site designer on my 1 and 1 server?

I see that Yahoo and others charge varying degrees of commission for their service. Is it worth it? Can this be had for no fee somewhere?

My ultimate find would be a simple, wysiwyg system that’s easy to use, edit, and is idiot proof. Something that takes care of all the eCommerce billing, printing of invoices etc. without any hassles.

Am I searching for a non existent holy grail? What are the options for a novice user?

I should mention that ease of use is TOP PRITORITY and takes a back seat to cost, whether up front or commissions.

So if there’s something out there that’s a little pricy but super easy to use, THAT’S the one for me!

Keep on searching for the grail.

Setting up a shopping cart involves a little bit more than just a wysiwyg program. quiet a few things are involved starting with your bank, merchants and credit card setups.

However you might want to look in to this one

If you're an absolute beginner and cost isn't an option then you might want to look at something hosted like Shopify. Magneto looks great but I'm hearing more and more voices of concern over it's size and slowness.

OScommerce is free but reportedly horrendously complex and a bit old-school.

Cubecart and Zencart reasonable but you have to do much of the work yourself - not great if you're a newbie.

You might check out Yahoo as well for a shopping cart solution. However, keep in mind that you might be limited on what you can change as far as the HTML if you are wanting to have access to that.

Metalinks has a pretty easy, basic shopping cart.

Back to Yahoo - they also offer an electronic payment gateway as well (Cybersource / Authorize.net, Payflow, LinkPoint / YourPay / First Data Global Gateway, Quantum are some examples of other gateways). Some gateways charge a flat monthly fee, while some will give you a few transactions free and then charge, some charge a flat rate on each transaction, and some might charge a percentage. This is on top of what the merchant account provider will charge you, so keep that in mind.

As far as carts - are you wanting a hosted solution (LinkPoint might still have a cart available) or do you want to host it yourself (if so, ASP, .NET, PHP)? You will also want to look at PCI DSS as well since you are just starting up. Most merchant account providers will want you to be compliant within a certain amount of days
