Going from web to print - 12/14/2001 15:06:07
Many of the graphics that I use for my web uses are also requested for a print newsletter. The original format of most is the digital camera default of 72dpi on a large size image. The 72dpi is too low a resolution for the print format...here's the question: If, instead of resizing the image to the size we need on the newsletter, we shrink it--the old dragging resize--to a smaller size, does the actual dpi resolution on the paper increase? In other words, if I have a 10x12" image at 72dpi and drag it down to a 5x6" image, do the dots condense and become a higher true dpi on the printed page? I know I can try this and see what happens, but asking the printer to run a proof of this is expensive and I'm hoping that someone can let me know if this is possible before we try it for real (non-profit org...limited funds!). Many thanks! -Steve

No that won't change the dpi to do it that way. However some graphics programs allow you to resize by increasing the dpi. That would be a better way to try it. But since you are starting with 72dpi, I don't think you will get the quality you want for print. The final quality depends on what you started with. Which in your case was something suitable for the web, not print. Can you change the camera to something else? Nancy Wrinkled is NOT one of the things I wanted to be when I grew up! As a general rule of thumb, the dpi of the graphics should be twice the line screen that the printer will use to print. For example, many brochures are printed at 150 line screen so the graphics used are 300 dpi. Some offset printers use an 85 line screen so your graphics should be 170 dpi. Talk to your printer to find out what line screen they are using and what resolution they want. From your example, the best you could do is 144 dpi which is not enough. If you reduce the image more you could possibly get to a usable resolution. You still will need a graphics program to resize the image. In photoshop, if you change the size and the resolution you should end up with an image whose file size is either the same or smaller that the original. As Nancy said, a better camera would be a good choice. CindyB Gary Ready Page Graphic Design www.ready-page.com

Thank you both. That's really helpful! The cameras in question all have higher resolutions (although not the default) and I've been working with the volunteer photographers to pay attention to this (me included!). But we occasionally get photos from others that I'd love to use, but are at 72dpi. Again, THANKS! -Steve

I feel your pain, we do this type of thing also. If you use Photoshop go to Image | Adjust Image Size and change the DPI to 150 (be sure Resample Image is not checked). That will roughly make your 10" x 12" image 5" x 6" (give or take a DPI or two). That will usually work pretty good unless you're after a cover shot. In that case you DO need a new camera! ; ) ++++++++++++++++++ ®Hobby Time_ www.places2ride.com Home Page_ www.maduko.com Day Gig_ www

As I started reading this, I thought "where's garyb; HE'S our resident expert on stuff like this". Then (natch) there "he" was..or his trusty sidekick cindyb. Cindy, WHEN are you going to register???!!! I always remember, when taking pics, something garyb said ages ago...."make it as BIG as you can" then you can do anything you want with it. It's always easier to downsize than upsize. Thanks garyb, I have taken that advice to heart. Jego "I am NOT tense, just terribly, terribly alert."

Hi Jego, I have registered a long time ago and have long since forgotten my password. The problem is that Gary and I use the same computer and his name is already signed in. It gets annoying having to sign in again if one of us is already signed in, especially since he has moddy status and I don't. The Real CindyB Gary Ready Page Graphic Design www.ready-page.com

Well, of course, the problem I have is that Cindy goes in and selects pictures of me that really represent me! How else to explain the picture selected of me? It really looks like me! If I were selecting I'd have selected someone with lots of hair... Anyway, Cindy and I work the business together so certainly, one of us will answer when it comes to stuff like this one.It is so funny Jego. I failed to take my own advise to heart a while back. I thought, heck, we'll never do print work for that person so I scanned all her stuff at low res and wouldn't you know it...now she has decided to offer a printed catalog :( Gary Ready Page Graphic Design www.ready-page.com
