Best way to handle paid for downloads... - 1/13/2009 23:35:37
Hi all,

I've just finished a new video that we'll be offering for sale as a DVD, and I would also like to offer it for download to their iPods (or computers...etc). I'm trying to figure out the best way to handle the download after the purchase is made. I guess the simple way would be standard ASP pages using database driven usernames & passwords which is easy enough to do, but what are the other options for not having everyone and their brother view the source code & redistribute the link to the file?

I also would like to have the download link expire after a certain amount of time, which I guess can be handled in the database with a stored procedure checking the age of the user and resetting the password.

Thanks for any advice!

You could probably write something but it might be much faster and easier if set up a simple shopping cart (not sure how you're collecting fees already) that handles software downloads. Something like www.candypress.com may do the trick for you. I'm not sure if the links for downloading expire or give X amount of retries etc.

I thought about that as well. We currently use Americart and I'll probably see what solutions they offer (if any). Thanks for the reply.

Usually if the shopping cart supports electronic downloads, the downloads might expire after a certain amount of downloads or after a certain amount of time has passed.

I do not know if the cart you have supports electronic downloads but if your company has a Paypal account, you might look into Payloadz. Another company is RegNow / Digital River that will manage / maintain everything for you.
