Scotty -> shopping cart abandonment rates (1/23/2009 14:41:41)

I've been hearing that using a hosted shopping cart can lose you a sizable % of sales over a locally hosted cart. Anyone have any experience with this?
Regards, Scotty

Yes. We have anecdotal evidence when we are asked to create a local cart for our clients. The perception (and reality) is that the user is being redirected to a web site that is not the original company site (no matter how well the visuals are emulated). Users may think they are being sent to a site that will behave in a malicious way (phishing, scam, virus planting, etc.) when, in fact, it is simply a third party hosted cart.

Anecdotal is all I can find also...I've been looking for some hard stats, however the big players e.g. hosted shopping carts, aren't about to spend the effort on a survey if they're expecting bad news.
Too bad they can't figure a way to keep the entire process on the local site...until after the 'Thankyou' page...then a redirect sends the information to the hosted cart.

http://www.e-tailing.com/research/merchantsurvey/press/6th_Annual_Survey.pdf

This site claims to have the specific data (cart abandonment when going to third party carts) but it's contained in an expensive white-paper.

They do have lot's of free data--cart abandonment included...

"Shopping Cart Abandonment
New questions examining the issues surrounding shopping cart abandonment find that policy standards have not yet been established as 29 percent currently do not hold merchandise in carts, 27 percent hold it for 1-3 months, and the balance range from 30 minutes to indefinitely. As 75 percent of these merchants may be losing sales by not communicating with shoppers who have abandoned their shopping carts, there is a clear opportunity to use abandonment as a means to connect with shoppers, though privacy issues must be kept in mind."

Thanks; I think I'll contact our shopping cart provider and see if there is a method to contact the 'abandoners of shopping carts' with a call to action of some sort.

I recently moved a client from 3rd party to their own ssl/cart and contrary to what I thought would happen - there was no measurable difference in sales. Again, like TWD experience, this is anecdotal. Take from it what you will. My gut still tells me that it *should* make a difference and maybe it does on those large orders or lost partnership opportunities. Or maybe it just depends on the industry. Whenever possible I will always opt for the local cart.

Then there is the case where the cart is on the local site but the paypal or google gateway takes the buyer to another page outside the local web for money processing. That scares some buyers also.

If you haven't sorted this out, you may find this new, free, service useful. Look at www.seewhy.com

Paul.

Thanks Paul. I have to admit I'm intrigued about the limited time free service offered here. Normally the forum would consider this type of post link spam but in this case I suggest a few others take a look at this and see what they think.
