Want to put my blog feed on my website - can you help me? - 1/24/2009 17:23:48
I want to put my blog feed into my website. I am using MS Frontpage for my webdesign, but I am in no way an html or rss coder. I use all the "cheats" available to me to get what I need to get done.

I used a free online rss to html converter to get code and put it on my website. My blog on my website is
www.victoriasgould.com/blog.htm
The blog feed is from wordpress
www.victoriagould.wordpress.com

On my site, there is a table. On the left column are two different codes I put in. The top, I copied from a site that had my blog feed. The bottom one was from the rss to html converter. They each have a little bit of what I want...... The one gives me only 1 post. The other gives me only the titles of the posts and navigation to my wordpress blog. I don't want the people on the victoriasgould.com/blog.htm to click off of my site.
I want to pull in my blog entries and accompanying text and photos.

I hope I made myself clear on what I need to do.....

If you could help me I would be most grateful. And please explain like you're talking to a child..... I'm really not a good coder.

THANKS!!

Vickie

Have you thought of using WordPress for your whole site? Not the hosted blog you have now - but download the actual wordpress package and use that instead of your old site. You can have pages for the content that's on your old site now and then use a single page for your blog - it'd be really easy to update and you could ensure that the whole site looks the same.

Just a thought!

I didn't know you could do that. So is the "wordpress package" a program? Like Frontpage?

Not exactly... it's a blog/cms programme. You download it onto your PC from wordpress.org and then you upload it to your webserver using an FTP programme (many free ones out there). This may well kill FrontPage extensions if you have them so don't try this unless you're sure you don't want them any more.

In fact, if you happen to have cpanel with your web hosting then you may well have Fantastico in there which will set up all sorts of different programmes onto your webserver at the push of a button (including wordpress). Literally one step!

If you don't have Cpanel/fantasico with your hosting then you need to set up the database and put the database information into the wordpress config file before you upload it to your web server - sounds harder than it is in fact.

Once uploaded you get a basic blog appearing on your site using their default theme (make sure you've saved your old site so you can canabalise the content).

You go into Wordpress via your browser and create a "Page" called home. Go into wordpress settings and tell it to use "home" as your static homepage. From then on you can create any number of "Pages" copying in your current content into each page's edit window (bit like writing in Word - really easy). You can also set up a blog page so that all blog entries (as opposed to pages) will only appear on that page.

From then on there are about a million options. Millions of free plugins (eg calendars, photo galleries, all sorts of functionality) and lots of things you can do such as have your latest blog post appear on your homepage.

The other advantage is that there are thousands of free "themes" so you can choose how you want your site to look without the pain of building it yourself. You change themes at the click of a button in the admin area (be sure you pick a theme that works with the latest WP version).

That's about it. It's pretty much all done via your browser.

Well, I just looked into that and they won't allow advertisements, etc on wordpress... even though it looks like a ton of people have affiliate ads. So I have to go back to the first idea which was to put my wordpress blog posts into my Frontpage website. Any ideas?

They won't allow adds on the hosted wordpress blog no - but on the stand-alone wordpress blogs that's fine - google ads whatever you like.

I also want to put a wordpress blog on an existing FP2003 site, and I don't want to use the Word Press program for the whole site. Can anyone give advice on how to do this?

You could Google "ASP Blog Scripts". There are a few that are free and pretty easy to use...upload and change the CSS to match your site layout.
