can't publish - FP ext problems we80.cnf - 2/15/2009 13:05:31
I have a 5000 page photography website GilTphoto.com. Used FrontPage 98, 2000, and 2002 to create it. Was up to 980,000 visitors since 2000. Last year Google penalized me for using META-REFRESH to create a slide show. Every 15 seconds, another page would load. While Google HAD indexed 3500 of my pages, it dropped to 100 and I lost 80% of my traffic. Google considers use of this tag spam. My site was also using frames (top, left, bottom, with picture in middle).

I deleted 2500 pages for the slide show, and re-programmed the remaining 2500 to not point to those pages. Then I eliminated the frame structure by switching to Shared Borders (big mistake). My top frame had a FP hit-counter. When I moved the frames into the shared borders, the hit counter duplicated for all pages. When I realized it, I moved the hit counter out of the borders, but FP did not delete the hidden files it creates for the counters (.htm.cnt) in the _vti directories. I deleted those hidden files by hand.

I also added another 2000 pages for a new trip I did to Colorado, so the site is back up to almost 5000 pages (site about 500 megs total in size).

Now the site won’t publish. Keep getting errors that we80.cnf not found (Front Page Server Extensions), or other errors related to the FP server extensions (could not parse). The FP server extensions have been deleted and reinstalled over a dozen times with no effect. Host recommended not using FP, so I downloaded both Microsoft SharePoint Designer and Expressions Web. Have tried publishing with all 3 programs. All 3 programs give same FP server extension errors. Tried FTP and that also didn’t work (active and passive FTP). FTP is not recommended for site using FP extensions.

Signed up for a different hosting company, same problems, unable to publish in any way, shape, or form! I even tried publishing to my hard drive by FTP. It was going, but estimated needing more than 24 hours which is ridiculous for only ½ gig. I even tried copying the entire site to another directory and deleting all the FP hidden files, then importing to a new web. Nothing works!

Any suggestions?

A basic question, but one you may not have considered: How much bandwidth are you paying for? With a site this large and considerable traffic I should think your needs approach at least 2 GB. This is something, btw, that your host (any host) won't tell you.

www.GilTphoto.com/ shows FPSE's are installed - using FTP at any point after Extensions are installed will corrupt them.

Doesn't sound right if you have a fast BroadBand/DSL connection at 6mbps or better. Are you publishing "Changed Files Only"?

Marvelous photos (albiet over-manipulated), btw. I thought I had "the photographers eye" but now after looking at your pics,I've decided to use my camera as a boat anchor :)

I have unlimited bandwidth and used to get 4000 page views a day with no problem.
I have 10 mbps DSL, so that's not the problem.

I think I have corrupted the _vti files by:
1. Deleting the .htm.cnt files by hand
2. Loading the site into Sharepoint Designer and trying to publish with it.
3. Loading into Expression Web and trying to publish. (error I got was Sharepoint server extensions not installed). Did Sharepoint Designer add it's own extension, corrupting the site by trying to go back into FP or Expression Web?

If I got rid of the Shared Borders, I could stop using the extensions completely. Most forms were turned off due to spam, and while I like the hit counter, it's not really necessary.

Changing from Shared Borders to Include would require manually editing 5000 pages. I would rather find an automated method. Find and Replace doesn't work well if multiple lines of code are necessary.

Was sucessful at publishing to my hard drive. Will try opening and publishing that version. I also heard that FP has problems with large sites, but don't want to break into subwebs, as that would affect current indexing by the search engines.

BTW, Since I was able to publish most of the major changes before running into the problem of not being able to publish at all, Google has increased the indexing of my pages from 108 to 1830 in only one week. Only 75 of my images, many hot linked from other sites.

Thanks! Most aren't manipulated much. I shoot Fuji Velvia slide film which is very saturated. Most are just resized and sharpened after scanning and correcting color casts.

I used to have the site designed for 800x600 and only displayed 350 pixel images, but since most are using larger resolutions these days, I'm changing them to 640 horizontal and 500 vertical.
