HELP retrieving deleted files - 2/15/2009 14:55:19
I deleted almost all of a webste the other day. I contacted my host who wrote "I have copied the content we have on backup for the domain xxxxx.com to your public_html/xxxxx_backup" - but I have NO idea on what to do now. Pretty PC clueless here. Any kind soul willing to get on the phone with me and help? 1974@woh.rr.com

Certainly a new one , but "publishing down" from the host server to your local drive should work. First, check with your host for the Username/Password (I'm assuming same will be needed) to "www.public_html/xxxxx_backup". Then: (1) In FrontPage, open your server files by clicking File >>Open, (2) Browse to “My Network Places” (3) In the File Name field type the complete web site address, for example: " http://www.yourwebsite.com", (4) Enter your username & password when prompted, (5) Once the server files open in FrontPage double click the index.htm (html) file >> then File/Publish Site and, (6) A Remote Web Site Properties box will open - for the address to publish, enter a destination on your hard drive, for example: C:\My Documents\My Webs\mysite. (Note: if the location doesn’t exist on your hard drive, you will be prompted to “Create? Yes or No”. Answer Yes.) Lastly: Open site in FrontPage, make changes as appropriate then republish to the Host Overwriting all Files – Local/Server files will then be “In Step.” If Extensions need to be installed, do this via your Host's Control Panel. Good luck and ... Welcome to OutFront

Plan B: It occurs to me (from prior experience 10+ years ago b4 I recognized the value of periodic, local backups) that your host should be able to restore your site from their most recent backup. Expect a modest charge for this service - $20-25 is my guess. This may save you some grief and aggravation. The vagary involved is how recent is the last host backup? Some hosts are very good about this - 2-3X daily - others every week or so or when they can get to it and then file verification parity checks often go lacking .

just to make sure - but i assume you haven't got a local copy on your machine, and that you've been making changes live on the server`??
