Display Video Online - 3/3/2009 14:29:53
I have no idea on how to display video online. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to display embedded videos online? Much like youtube does?

There are lots of different ways with various pros and cons.

My own opinion is that Flash is the best method of displaying video on a website - I tend to use SWFobject (a javascript script) to display it in an accessible manner.

If you don't fancy hosting it yourself then you can always embed a youtube video in your page - but be aware that there's a time limit on the vids you can upload. I still use SWFobject to embed youtube vids too.

The advantage of Flash over say quicktime is that more people have the flash plugin plus it's a more compressed format.

We would be hosting the videos ourselves.

So, how do i go about placing them on the web then with javascript / flash?

http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/Free-Video-to-Flash-Converter.htm

This uses flash and works well if you are hosting your own videos.

If you have a long video, try Vimeo.com

Good luck, Ed

That works perfect!!

Now, how do I get the movie to have a pause / play button and the such?

The video controls are also Flash. You need a tool to create them (like, er, well, Flash). We really like Blue Pacific software and use their video-encoder to convert to Flash with many choices of players. I'm sure that these forum members can also give you great recommendations for free solutions. http://www.blue-pacific.com

I use Swish video to add controls but it's not free.

You could do it the easy way and use Youtube...

I currently own swishmax. The problem is, I will have thousands of videos and I would not want to change this for every video. What video displays is based upon a search criteria.

so, how do I just build or buy or get a single player that just pauses, plays, stops, fast forwards and rewinds? And, once I get that, then what do I do to play the video?

Have a look at Wimpy Video. I haven't used it myself but I know that Jaybee has recommended it in the past - that might be a good option for you.
