Open New Window? - 3/7/2009 22:56:35
When linking to shopping cart hosted on another server is it better to have the cart site open in a new window? My shopping cart is a vendor-supplied site that I link to from my main navigation bar and throughout my site. I do have "no follow" tags with these links to avoid duplicate content penalities. I seem to remember reading that Google would prefer that a new window isn't opened. Comments? Thanks!

I always keep it in the same window. I have found that people have made changes to the original order and forgot to update the cart or another cart opened and got confused and were then upset when the order was wrong. You can always tell them you have another company doing transactions for you. If you have success you should customize your cart so nobody can really tell unless they look for it.
Hope that helps.

I try to never open new windows. The only exception might be when you've got a really complex form and you might offer a help link on an item - then I'd open up a little window with the explanation in it. Or, actually - if opening a PDF as people tend to shut those using the red close button rather than going "back".
