Error Message - 3/13/2009 20:34:27
I am using Front Page 2003. If I open the site with a file on my external hard drive everything works fine. I have the same file copied to the internal hard drive, but when I try to publish using that file which is a direct copy of the file on the external hard drive I get an error message that says "500 I won't open a connection to 127.0.0.1 (only to 76.88.236.64) 500 Unknown Command" In trying to figure out why this is happening, I moved the file on the external hard drive to another folder on the same drive, and I get the same error message. On the other hand if I copy the file from the internal hard drive to the folder that worked on the external hard drive the file will publish just fine with no error message. I am completely at a loss.

implies that you are trying to publish from your hard drive to another hard drive on the same computer. Not sure why you would do that other than to create a duplicate website on your hard drive.

In Frontpage you should publish to the website located on your host server. Use http://www.whatever.com

If you still get a 500 error doing that then there is a problem at the host end.

I appreciate the reply, but what I don't understand is that I am publishing to the same site address no matter where I got the orriginal file. The web site was set up almost 4 years ago, and I have never had this problem before. It is not published to an http address but rather to an ftp address. I am certainly not knowingly trying to publish to my hard drive.

In FrontPage terminology the word Publish implies that you are publishing to a http://www.whatever.com. Have you tried that? You may have to re-install your extensions on your host, as each time you FTP you run the risk of corrupting them.

Not sure this info will help you but I found this reference to 500 error messages:

The Internal Server Error - 500 error message is very generic, and could mean many things. To get more information about the error, you'll need to change the settings on your web browser.

To see more detail on the error do the following: In Internet Explorer, click on Tools/Internet Options/Advanced. Under "Browsing", Uncheck the box "Show friendly HTTP error messages".

Don, I appreciate your feedback. I discovered what the problem was quite by accident. I thought I would try to do a backup of the files on the hard drive where the file was located that worked to see if it would transfer to another hard drive. After the backup was complete, there was a notice that said backup complete with errors. I looked at the log and discovered that every one of the files had been rejected. So I checked the file sharing and discovered that file sharing had not been turned on. Once I allowed full file sharing on the hard drive all my problems went away. I don't know why I hadn't thought of that before.
