Hi, this is going to sound like a daft question but what size does the background image need to be? eg if im designing an image with gradients, i want it fixed but I guess need to design it based on peoples main browser resolution?

Depends on the image really.

If I'm doing a gradient then I'll make it probably about 20px wide and as high as necessary to transition dark to light or whatever - then repeat it horizontally. Most of my background image gradients are about 20px by 200px or something similar.
