We have programmers who run the complicated parts of our site, as it has a Cold Fusion shopping cart.

They also have an email marketing plug in feature. Since we signed with them, the list has grown at a steady rate.

All of the sudden, 30% of the names were missing. The excuse was WEIRD! They moved to a new server, and accidentally added tons of names with faulty verification settings. So they did it again, and it was a success. Success?????? They removed over 8,000 names. Like I said, these names were added gradually and steadily to our list.

Other than this problem, they are very sweet, and competent. But since email marketing has always been a succesful low cost way to reach repeat customers, the bosses want to move our website completely.

Has this ever happened to anyone before?

The names should be stored in a database somewhere. The host *should* be backing up the data at a minimum of every 24 hours. So have you asked for a backup?

What a great idea. I have a copy of all the emails sent before 1/3 were lost. But I will ask for a back up, too. I'm curious to see what they'll say.

That kind of situation sucks. I have never had any problems of that kind. Like someone said before, You should ask them for the last backup of your site before they screwed your list.
