One Broken Hyperlink Caused Missing Pages - 3/17/2009 8:17:24
I had one internal hyperlink broken. What I did was go to Edit>Find and Replace. All pages. The link was "Art Review". Found it in all pages. Replaced it with art_review2.htm which is the correct page. Now it shows my links as:

Portraits | Landscapes | Still Lifes | Narrative
Animals | Drawings | Pastels | Sketch Book
Biography | Portraits | Landscapes | Still Lifes | Narrative | Animals | Drawings | Pastels | art_review2.htm | Contact | Links

This is obviously wrong. Worse, it's caused some entire pages, when I click on the "Next" link to have disappeared entirely--nothing but a blank page. For example when I click on the link from Narrative to narrative2.htm I get a blank page. In folder list if I click the page icon to narrative2.htm it comes up a blank page.

I've gone back to Find and replace. Typed in art_review2.htm. All pages. Now there's a list of pages with red dots below Status.

This is all I can tell you. It seems like an enormous task to repair all this. Is it possible to correct at all? If so, how? I do have the site published via FTP so these missing pages should be able to transfer back intact locally. Then I suppose I can start over. So then the question is how to change that art_review2.htm to Art Review and link it to the appropriate page. I guess I can't use Find and Replace since I only have the above links on the main pages, not the pages that show the enlarged images.

My site is at: The Art of Robert Tracy.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Robert

It's all working fine for me. I went from Narrative to Narrative1 and then Narrative2.

If this issue is only on your machine, two things you can do.

Publish the site back down from the host to your machine.

Or try recalculating Hyperlinks.

One thing to remember for the future, before doing ANY replace all, take a backup copy of the site first.

Thank you.

The problem is on the links at the bottom of each main page. Clicking the link Art Review takes you to a blank page. But I suspect that by publishing back down to my machine I can fix that manually, page by page. I'm not going to try replace all on this site. I may set up a test site and try that feature out.

"If it ain't broke..... fix it until it is". Indeed.

LOL, lesson learned.

Replace all is dangerous.
Replace all in all files is beyond lunacy.

The problem being, as you have discovered, there's always something in the site somewhere that uses exactly the same term as you're replacing that you've completely missed. The replace replaces it, causes chaos and then you have to trawl through the code trying to find it.

I only ever use replace all in all files if I'm replacing an entire line, a meta tag for example, so I'm replacing via the code tab, not some text on the view page which may well have been shoved into the HTML somewhere by the WYSIWYG.

Now as to the problem with your links at the bottom of the page.

The link goes to a page called art_review.htm which is blank. The page is actually at art_review2.htm

Lunacy. Indeed. I can't claim lucidity over this matter. It's why I came here for it. And found it in you. And thank you for it again.

I shall never touch Replace all in all files again. Scares me.

LOL, most people would disagree with you. they're convinced I'm a certified fully paid up member of the Lunacy Brigade. :)
