frames with template best practice - 3/17/2009 17:30:32
Hi,
I'm working on a client's site; redesigning it...I have the site just about completely built using a template that works in both fp2003/expressions...

There are 5 pages that will contain content sent as a url from another company who supplies the information. This was setup I believe in the previous site as frames. It doesn't look like this template I'm using cam with a frames page as some often do.

My question is; what is the best practice...should I continue to use frames for these pages? And if not, what would be the best alternative?

Or, if I should use the frames...how do I go about having a frames page that matches my template?

All help is immensely appreciated, Thanks,
Sharon

I would normally use includes for that purpose, for example assuming that you have a content div, you would include the outside content there. But do you have a url so that we can see your problem?

Hi and thanks for the reply.

The site in progress is located at

http://clienttest.com.mytempweb.com

The folks that take care of the auto inventory database are sending me urls that need to be used with frames according to them. The old live site is at http://timbushmotors.com

So the inventory pages I believe I need to make into framed pages; this seems like it should be easy with expressions but I keep messing it up I do believe. Just have never used frames before.

Am very interested in what you think; as I need to get these pages ready like yesterday :)

Thanks, Sharon

The data they are sending comes from another site and they use iframes to insert it. Bit like using Google maps.

What you need to do is set up a Div and then insert this inside it

<iframe src="inventorymain.html" width=770 height=400 name="theframe"></iframe>

then tailor the Div to whatevery you want to fit in with your layout. It can't be any smaller than the 770 x 400 of the iframe though.

Or you could look up HTML include and do it that way. It's neater.

Thanks ever so much! Finally got it! My template already had div settings...so I plugged it in and voila!

I'm going to work at coming back to these pages and seeing if I can't get the html include figured out; but this way it's at least done and up; then I can tinker....thanks again!

Hello once again...maybe I'm not as smart as I thought?! :)

Upon publishing the pages...they are exhibiting page not found from the server...it's showing up great on my computer and when I ask for a preview from within fp or expression? Will contact host but wanted to see if you guys had maybe experienced this before?

Thanks, Sharon
