_private Folder Password? - 3/21/2009 16:51:19
Hi! I work in "real time" directly on the server using Front Page (meaning, I don't created on my computer and then publish) I need to have a password protected directory for a school site for students to have access to files we will put in there. My cpanel via our host won't let me do that anymore, says I need to remove FP extensions to enable it - and I don't want to do that as I use Front Page for the site. I know the _private folder is password protected - but how can I get the password? My user namd and password for logging into the site with front page isn't working. I have tried to figure out how to change it but anytimre I go into front page with trying to change the Permissions I get an error telling me I need a "A World Wide Web Broswer, such as Internet Explorer is required to use this feature"

the _private folder is normally not password protected. You should be able to double click on it to see what is there. Usually nothing unless you put something there. If you want to password a directory/folder do this: To password-protect a directory/folder in FrontPage: 1. Open your Web site in FrontPage. 2. Click on Folders in the Views list, right-click on the folder you want to password protect, then click on Convert to Web 3. A dialog box will open asking you to confirm, click on the Yes button – the folder will now appear with a blue globe inside of it, indicating it's a Web 4. Right-click the folder and select Open 5. Click on Tools in the navigation menu, click on Security then click on Permissions 6. Click on the Settings tab, select the Use unique permissions for this Web, then click on the Apply button 7. Click on the Users tab, then click on Add 8. Type the name of each user that will have access to the folder along with a password for each user – be sure to indicate that the users are allowed to Browse this Web 9. Click on the OK button after adding the users 10. In the permissions dialog box, select Only registered users have browser access 11. Click on the OK button Note Do not try to set password protected directories on a FrontPage Web site using the Hosting Control Panel. This will break the FrontPage extensions and may require your Web site to be reset in order to get it working again.
