IE8 Big Problems - 3/23/2009 11:54:56
I updated my browser to IE 8 after receiving the message from Microsoft as I am sure many people did in the last week. Several of my pages look like crap as anywhere I used a table additional space has been created. For example if I have two cells on top of each other the text in the bottom cell has been pushed down with extra space. I have checked things like paragraph, padding but I still cannot get the text to top-align. Is anyone else seeing this?

You'll have to post a link so we can see what's going on.

IE8 is still in Beta so I wouldn't worry too much yet.. .but it's certainly worth keeping an eye on.

(The hope is that it will be more standard compliant when actually released which means that you'll need to try to ensure that you use good coding techniques on your sites. )

IE8 was officially released March 18th.
Lots of sites are seeing problems and a temporary fix is to place this META tag in between the <head> and </head> tags on all of your pages:
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=EmulateIE7" />
This will force the IE8 browser to emulate IE7 (assuming your pages looked good there).
Then you will have to re-code for IE8. As tailslide says, post some code where you see problems and the folks here will help.

!! too busy to notice!! Now I have to connect up my old laptop and upload IE8 as I'm willing to bet that IE8 won't work alongside Tredosoft's old versions of IE. Pain!

Well, there wasn't exactly a lot of fanfare. This isn't a good browser and doesn't live up to the many promises made before release about standards compliance. I know, why believe them at all. I have a few old sites that use javascript menu systems in layers that are now spread all over the page. Going to recode in CSS but what a chore!
