Need help with browser compatibility issues using Front... - 3/27/2009 20:24:12
I have a web site, creeksidewoodshop.com, that I have built and maintained with FrontPage 2003 since 2004. The site is a hobby for me and I'm not a professional web developer. My main browser is IE but recently people have complained that the links in my site do not work while using Firefox. For example, the links on my home page that are simple mouseover commands to highlight the link work fine in IE but do not work in Firefox. Even Frontpage generated navigation buttons do not work in Firefox. There are other similar issues such as accessing files that work in IE but not with Firefox. What can I do to make my web site more usable for Firefox? How do other developers deal with building a site that is compatible for all browsers? I want to continue using FrontPage to manage my web site. Thanks for your help.

It looks like you are using a lot of code that only works in IE. You should design for FireFox. Learn HTML and CSS and you will be a lot better off. Also did you copy stuff from MS Word or MS Publisher? If so, that is a big no-no! You can still use FrontPage, just don't use stuff that only works in IE.

Frontpage 2003 was a great improvement over previous versions, but there is no short cut or web bot that will make it's output compatible with all browsers unless you become familiar with HTML and CSS. The best advice I can give is to work in Code View, not Design View so you will not get proprietary code just clean HTML. Although MS advises use of "Optimize HTML" I don't use that tool because their understanding of clean HTML is not mine. It is perfectly possible to build pages that validate with FP2003 - if you don't use Design View or any of the FP bots. quote:
If you want to use DOCTYPE declarations in your FrontPage Web pages, you should either avoid using FrontPage design-time tools that insert custom mark up or use the Optimize HTML feature (Tools menu) in FrontPage to remove most or all FrontPage design-time markup. This allows you to run the pages through a validator without receiving errors on FrontPage markup code. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa218654(office.11).aspx Tips for accessible content in Frontpage- http://www.webaim.org/techniques/frontpage/ MS Frontpage Information Centre http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/office/aa905422.aspx Best practices for working with HTML code in Frontpage. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/office/aa905423.aspx Using Cascading Style Sheets on your web site. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/aa140116.aspx
