I visit other websites in my field where the description tag text is displayed as the very first item on their websites home page.

Mine doesn't and in fact it is nowhere to be found on the home page, but I would like it to. How can I correct that?

The meta description tag allows you to influence the description of your page in the crawlers that support the tag.

Meta tags go in between the "opening" and "closing" HEAD tags.

Here is an example:
<meta name= "description" content="Put your page description here">

Note that not all crawler bots look at this. Google is one big example.

description tag text

Are you saying this is actually visible on the homepage? The Meta tag is only visible in the code.

Pull up one of the sites you have seen that do it, 'View Source' and you should be able to see how they've done it. Probably a Heading or Paragraph with the text typed in.

If you can't work it out then come back and post a link for us so we can see what you mean.
