I must have incorrectly uploaded my custom 404 page because now in my Google Webmaster Tools I receive the message "NOT Verified We've detected that your 404 (file not found) error page returns a status of 200 (Sucess) in the header". After receiving that message I marked the custom 404 page as "do not publish", disallowed it in my robots-txt file, republished and notified my host that I'll be using their 404 page so hopefully my site should return to "VERIFIED" status? I have my custom 404 page in the same location (same type of file path) as my other pages. Is this incorrect? Should it be located in a separate folder? How should it be? Thanks!

Usually, it is in the root folder, but this can also be changed / set up via IIS.

I remember running into this issue a year or so ago & I asked the server admin to "fix it". He went into IIS - made a change and Google was happy. For a quick fix, you should be able to add that <meta> element into your <head> to have Google authenticate your website.

My host (Go Daddy) isn't able to make any server changes. Is it best to:

1. Forget about having a custom 404 page (instead use Go Daddy's generic page 404 page) even though Google's Webmaster Guidelines suggest having a custom page?

2. Use the meta tag verification method and my own custom 404 page even though it doesn't work the way Google would like it too?

Most hosting companies will support a custom 404 error page. And it seems GoDaddy does it also? Why not both, create the custom 404 error page as you have, but enter the meta tag into your website to verify?

You can always redirect your custom error pages in your .htaccess file like below

ErrorDocument 403 http://www.yoursite.com/errordirectory/403.shtml
ErrorDocument 400 http://www.yoursite.com/errordirectory/400.shtml
ErrorDocument 404 http://www.yoursite.com/errordirectory/404.shtml

Just put it in the top of .htaccess

I use my own 'custom' 404error page from GoDaddy and it sits in my Root folder - I think I call it 404error.htm

It should be a slam dunk to set it up from your GoDaddy Hosting Panel.

Maybe I misunderstood your Dilemma?
