Files Automatically Save to Desktop - 4/4/2009 22:01:47
My partner's two laptop computers both automatically save any downloaded file, or email attachment to his desktop. It's a pain. For instance, this morning I've been updating all the virus/syp and malware programs, boy didn't they need updating, and all the .exe files end up on the desktop. I was sure I had asked this question once before on this forum but couldn't find it when searching. Does anyone know how I can change this? On my two desktop computers files automatically download into "My Downloads" and email attachments don't actually download anywhere else. TIA Nicole

Nicole, in FF you can go to Tools > Options > General (tab) and set the downloads to go where you want. I looked in IE but couldn't find a similar setting, sorry.

Thanks Mike, I'll give that a try later today. We're Firefox users btw, no need to worry about IE. I didn't even consider it would be a Firefox thing, I was thinking it was a Windows setting?

Is it Firefox's email client that is automatically saving these files?

It was with his ISP's email, he tells me that he used to log into their web mail to open it. We're not with that old ISP anymore, with a bit of luck I'll have him using Thunderbird soon.

Yeah, It's in FF - It's a great feature being able to choose where the downloads go. Don't forget tho' to move those downloads from the desktop regularly. Oh, and don't forget to delete those exe installers either!
