That's a very interesting question.

I haven't tried doing that before, however, I do believe you could do something based on the referrer (the page that has your link).

Similar to the idea of hot-link prevention techniques, you would be able to not allow certain referrers from viewing your website. So if someone clicks a link to your site on xyz.com, you will be able to block all referrers equal to xyz.com

This will not stop people from linking to your site - there is nothing you can do to stop that. This will simply stop the user from visiting your website using a link from xyz.com

You can see who is linking to your website by doing a google search for the following: link:www.domain.com

For example: http://www.google.com/search?q=link%3Awww.domain.com&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

If you are not sure how to implement something like I mentioned above, I could help you out, but would need to know if you have a windows or linux host.

Is there any particular reason why you want to do this?

That Google link search command doesn't seem to catch all the links. I tried it on a couple of sites and it missed most of the links.

Did Google index the page that had the link?

I've seen that it is off too sometimes. Never really looked into it much more than that though.

Yes, but I sure could not find any evidence of that site linking to anything on my website. Maybe it had in the past?

I use the stats to find who is linking to stuff on my webs. I know a site in Germany is hotlinking to one of my photos of a special plant (flower) but Google didn't catch that.

I am sure you can use some software to help you. But I don't know how to find them.

Having done this for many years I have a simple question...

Why would you worry yourself over this insignificant issue?

If you worry that those backlinks from spam sites affect your SERPs negatively, Forget about it. They don't affect your rankings negatively.

- So if a competitor spammed my website all over the internet, on forums, porn sites, virus websites, etc, it wouldn't negatively effect my rankings?

There has been a lot of debate on this issue. But i think if it would be the case, it would have been lot easier for anyone to outrank their rivals.

I had a reason a few months ago to worry about a site linking to my site.

Clickmybucks.com This site would "pay" people in third worlds countries around Africa to surf certain websites. In turn, the websites would pay clickmybucks.com for a lot of meaningless traffic.

Why? My guess is the websites thought more traffic=higher rank.

For some reason, Clickmybucks.com put a link to my website up. There were so many people in third world countries surfing my site, that clickmybucks was the SECOND largest source of referral in February.

And my internet host charged us to upgrade our server due to all the traffic.

So that would be one instance of wanting to stop and incoming link.

For that situation, you can have your web host block the referrer. It doesn't do anything about a backlink, it just makes sure people can't visit your website using THAT link.
