form works on test site but not "live" (diffe... - 4/9/2009 11:58:52
I have a form that works 100% on the 'test' site on my webhost but when I forward a dns name towards the same page and click submit it comes up with a 404 error here is my test http://edtweb25dev137.edthosting[dot]com/entake/ my hopeful live name is entake.genevaworldwide[dot]com my knowledge of frontpage is next to nothing but it just confuses me that it works perfectly on the test but not the other name.... any thoughts? I'd really appreciate any help i feel like its something very foolish that I'm missing. located below is what comes out after clicking the submit button which exists for the 'test' but not for 'live' (same for after both test and live) /_vti_bin/shtml.dll/entake.htm is this unique or am i really missing something very miniscule?? thanks for your help

the root directory definitely does, I assumed that the subfolders would as well.. but ona side note the 'test' site works 100% including the form.... its the website name... I just realized it may not be a frontpage issue at all... maybe a DNS issue... which still confuses the crap out of me because its pointed to the same subfolder... is there sometype of permissions or form property i may need to change maybe? (shooting in the dark...) i shouldve mentioned that the 'live' site is just the name, it 'should' (according to my webhost) be pointing directly at the same folder that the 'test' is displaying.

It could be a DNS issue. It could be a FPSE issue. I remember awhile back when users would have problems getting FrontPage forms to work properly on a sub-web / sub-site (which is what you probably have / relying on).

i was just thinking of the issue with a sub-directory last night.... ti appears you were right on target, but my host replied with this error for confirming that fpse were installed. (i assumed they were because my test site works 100% and that it was just the name that doesn;t work). if you can identify this let me know I'll be googling it as i post and see what comes up. Unable to create a web for the URL "/" because its root directory, "C:\Inetpub\Websites\DOMAINNAME\subfolder\ ", falls below the root of another web in the directory "C:\Inetpub\Websites\DOMAINNAME". I dont think moving it to the root directory will be an issue so after i do some research that will be my next step. as an update i found this microsoft article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/201522 and have asked if it were possible to move the subfolder to under the websites directory. if not I'll have to see if moving it to the root folder is possible. thanks for your help, I'll post the result of what happens later.

Usually, FPSE are installed on http://www.example.com. If you have a subweb - http://subweb.example.com, usually on the server, this is just a folder, and the URL is being directed to a specific folder / path on the server, i.e. d:\domains\example.com\wwwroot\example (http://www.example.com/subweb). Even though FPSE are installed on http://www.example.com, this does not translate to "FPSE are installed on http://subweb.example.com or http://www.example.com/subweb". The subweb is basically an entirely different website that FP recognizes as a website so webmasters could maintain separate borders / themes, etc (all those nasty little FP webbots that drove a lot of crazy(ier).

Corey, isn't your example (http://subweb.example.com) a sub-domain and if so it requires a dns propagation to occur. Maybe his host has not done that. I know when I recently created a sub-domain for one of my clients they had to wait several hours before it could be revised or published with Frontpage. Their host said it could take as long as a day. Remember, sub-domains require that the extensions be installed separately for that sub-domain. In my clients case, they later removed them from that sub-domain and left them installed on the main domain.

It just really depends. But I said it a different way quote:
Remember, sub-domains require that the extensions be installed separately for that sub-domain. That was hopefully my point, even though the FPSE are installed on the domain - they might not be installed on the sub-domain (which can also be considered a subsite / subweb within FP). I do remember though where users reported problems with FP forms on a subweb not work properly and to one extent, this could be considered a subweb
