Windows Vista Question - 4/12/2009 22:28:06
My old Dell laptop is slowly on its way out. Getting a lot of blue screens. So I bought a new HP laptop but intead of XP I have Vista. I would love a seamless transition but I am in doubt now. A couple of issues.

1. Found my FP 2003 UPGRADE version, but cannot locate my orginal FP98 to install first so that my 2003 will take. So this has left me scratching my head. Need to keep looking, I guess.

2. Reading on Net that Vista is not a perfect match with FP2003. I'm not a programmer or schooled. Just self-taught.

3. I want to lookinto the future. FP has served me well since the late 90s. A very nice tool. But now what with Vista? My new laptop is still a virgin. Only 2 items loaded into it on my own (PhotoImpact 11 and Picasa 3). Should I be thinking of a totally different software suite such a dreamweaver? But what? And what would that be that is Vista friendly and that I can learn on my own? Or is what I am reading about the Vista/FP issues not true?

Your input will be appreciated. Thanks, cedarpost

You should check out Expression Web. It has an interface much similar to that of FrontPage. Unfortunately it does not include features like hit counters, contact forms, or other FrontPage Server Extension related items.

Have you tried installing a trial version of FP98 downloaded from the web? You could always use someone else's installation cd to get it installed, and then apply your upgrade.

I've installed FP 03 on Vista before with no problems.

I can't vouch for FP2003 but my FP2002 installed without any problems. I hate Vista and one of the biggest problems I had was getting programs to install. Actually I planed to upgrade computers when Vista came out and could install so few programs that I needed that my Vista computer just sat for ages. I could use it for video editing but it was about the only thing that would run. My Frontpage would run but my Photoshop wouldn't and without that it was easier to use my old puter. Receintly I got a newer version of Creative Suite and it installed so at long last I am using my Vista computer. I would like a new laptop but will hold off for the next operating system.

With the new CS version I installed I started to use Dreamweaver instead of FP. The learning curve is a pain but I love Dreamweaver compared to FP. I think it might be something worth considering for you.

Just for your information, I have Vista 64 on a laptop and so far everything I have installed on it has run and better than on my old eight year old Dell XP. FrontPage 2003 runs just fine. I also do video editing and that works super also. The wife had to install additional memory on her Vista 32 desktop in order for the highend video editing stuff to run properly.

Cedarpost, did you actually try to install the FP2003 anyway? I recently upgraded to Vista too and with all the tinkering and installations, I couldn't remember afterwards if I had the presence of mind to install a previous version first. You might try it if you haven't already. The worst it can do is say No. I've found FP2003 seems to work fine under Vista. So far no problems that I can think of.

I have to admit, I'm a sucker for eye candy, so although I expected to hate Vista and the new Office, I kinda like 'em. (ducking and running)

RE: Windows Vista Question - 4/26/2009 3:10:28
I love Vista! ... and am running 32-bit. (64-bit I use on my W2k3 Server... anyways..)

I run both FP2003 and EW2 on my Vista box. I flip to FP - from time to time - to use or add some of the "older" technology and add-ins from my FP installation (I'd paid for some media add-ins and other cutesy tricksy stuff) and then flip rite back to Expression again for day-to-day sites.

What blew me away about moving to EW from FP was 2 things:

1).. EW taught me to be a better coder by a solid 50% in the space of 45 days - without hardly even a curve!

2).. I made EW look just like FP with the folder list on the left and the "meat" on the right and hardly missed a beat!

If you want to be a better coder with hardly any learning curve and increase your productivity with a program whose core is in tune with the present then you could do a lot worse then going with EW.

At this stage of the game Vista is the most secure and stable desktop O/S available - just keep up with the updates. It was unfortunate that Vendors' drivers were not ready on release and that in spite of people saying they wanted more security it turns out that, well, they didn't!

25 years I've been "Professional IT Systems Support", turned a lot of people's heads around about Vista's benefits and Malware distributors now predominantly target *users* rather than O/S's - that's always the biggest weakness: XP, Vista, Mac or Win98!

Anyways, I'd stick with your Vista, Install EW2, ignore all the .asp stuff for now in EW, find your org FP disk (or not) and install FP too. Add IE8 and FF3.x and you'll be flying in no time :)

Oh yes, I run an Intel MBoard - 2.8Ghz single core - from 1999, 2GB RAM and Vista Ultimate.... It's been the best Desktop I've ever worked with. Period. (alright, alright, yes, I did mumble about it a bit when it first came out but, that was then..... before I upgraded to 2GB RAM - from 512MB. Truly!)

Good Luck. HTH

Apologies for the "Off-Topic" - not sure of the slick way to start a new topic and reply at same time??

Treetops. Are you or the wife using Adobe Premiere? 64 Bit?

I have a client to upgrade from XP-32bit and he's always using Premiere to render Video - in time for the Daily News... Speed is of the essence or core or whatever.

I'm thinking one of those i7 procs. with Vista 64-bit O/S and 64-Bit Adobe App above would be the ticket? Thoughts?

Thanks.

No, I use Vegas Movie Studio for videos. (by Sony) But I have heard good things about Adobe Premiere. It should do just fine.

Not to be flippant but does that Sony Software come with that current type of Sony Video Cam? Is Sony selling software that competes in the Video Editing Market or, is that Software "bundled" with Cam. purchase?

Thanks.

No, it was a stand alone program. It is the dumbed down version of more expensive Sony Vegas. But I find it is just a little easier to use than Sony Vegas. However, both have a learning curve. If you want to really produce professional Vids then Sony Vegas is the program that competes with Adobe.

Thank you for the Thank You! Best wishes to your client in making good videos.

As far as I know there have been no problems yet using Sony Vegas on Win 7. It should let Vegas render videos faster as Vegas can make use of multi core processors.

Yup.

Watch for Cannon Beach / Seaside local news on the Portland - and national if it's deemed important enough - stations..... that's where the video ends up.

Thanks again for your knowledge and comunicative reciprocity.
