FrontPage keeps prompting for Username and password - 5/6/2009 17:32:27
FrontPage keeps prompting for Username and password when accessing websites on a local web server. This issue is very hard to explain because it seems to make no sense. Using the words "local server" gives the wrong impression of my issue. It is often MUCH faster for me to do some database work on the local server rather than have FrontPage temp cache MS Access files that are in the 10s of megs of size to a workstation. Here is the scenario. I have a web server where I host many websites. It is a Windows 2003 Standard Server running IIS6. I have been hosting the same sites on this server for years and have had no problem of accessing the websites locally until last weeks updates. Let's say for example one of the sites is http://www.visionquestit.com/ If I use that address to open the site in FrontPage from a remote PC I can open it and edit it just fine in FrontPage. If, however, I open FrontPage on the web server itself and attempt to do that same thing, I only get the sign in dialog over and over even if I use Administrative Level credentials. I can open the site using local paths I.E. \\localhost\visionquestit\html\ The issue here is that if you use parenting paths, this can wreak havoc on the site when FrontPage starts moving files around and tracking them for you which is one of the great things I like about FrontPage. I just don't know why this is such a problem and I wish I could remember how to resolve it. I know it is a permission setting in the Windows\System32\ folders containing IIS elements such as %systemroot%\system32\inetsrv\metaback. I just don't remember what they were and I am not willing to arbitrarily play with them to work it out. This came back because Microsoft was kind enough to put back the permissions during the last update. Unfortunately rolling back the update does not resolve the permission issue since it does not reverse the settings to what they were. This is definitely not an Internet Explorer issue. Opening IE on the local machine and changing security setting of any kind does not resolve this issue. Any help much appreciated.

It sounds like you are using remote desktop to terminal into the server, and then opening front page?? If this is correct and front page can not access sites by domain name from the server itself, it could be that the server is behind a firewall and the ipaddress are being natted. If this is the case you will need a host entry with the private ip address in the host file on the web server only. If dns is on this server also, use caution as I do not know what the outcome of the host entry would have on dns...(I never thought about that part before) I have several web servers behind a firewall and can manage sites using front page inside the firewall but only when adding the host entry...althogh usually there is nothing much you can't do from outside the firewall that you can from inside....at least where front page is concerned. Thanks for your reply. Yes I am using remote desktop to terminal into the server, and then opening front page to open a local website via daomin anme URL. But no, the server is actually on my LAN and not behind a firewall. I found a working solution. I think in a recent Server Update Windows changs its NTLM permission schema which caused this issue. I have done more research on this than I care to remember but almost every clue leads me to this conclusion. The work around is go into IIS manager and select the website's properties for Directory Security and change the setting from Windows Integrated to Basic. The servers are behind fire walls and I only allow access through port 80. Anyway this works for now. Since FrontPage is doomed and so are FPSEs, this is only temporary anyway.

Glad you found a workaround... I got to thinking about my answer last night at one point and realized that it may be related to something along those lines. I would consider adding a new admin user to that site, recalculating the extensions, closing front page, reopening and see if the new user can author the site. If so, the ACL has become messed up on that user... Is this only one site that it happens on, or all sites that same user tries to access? Rick Universal4

I have dozens of sites on the server. Most of the sites I manage using FrontPage from a workstation and not directly on the server. I only manage a few using remote access because they have very large databases and FrontPage is very slow to cache the data locally everytime I need to modify or look at the database. Much easier to Remote Access the server and open the site in FrontPage. It does not matter who the author is, even the server administrator cannot access the site using the domain URL. I am not looking forward to shifting to the publish only method and removing FPSE even though I know I am headed that way. I have one or two others access these sites to help keep them updated and it is so easy to access the site directly. Having to have a local copy kept current on multiple PCs is going to be a real pain.
