Hate to ask, first website, need help with quote! - 5/8/2009 17:12:26
Hi all, Sorry to ask about this cause you're all gonna think I'm dodging the responsibility when in truth, I have no idea :P Basically I was asked by an aunt to create her business a website. I spent quite a bit of time on it, invested in Flash CS4 for Mac and read up on some stuff to allow me to finish it. Now, I'm stuck with quoting her a final sum, and I don;t have a clue how high (or low) to aim for. I'm OK when it comes to bartering I just need to know what, in the web industry, my site would be worth to a client- obviously this will be at a lowered price as she is family. Thanks for any contributions you might come up with, Your saving me a whole load of trouble! Lawrence The site is ---www.workingirls.co.uk---

Very, Very difficult to charge a family member for ANYTHING. Let alone a web site that can and should cost thousands if there is ecommerce and/or future maintenance involved. You know the drill.... Any amount will sound too much for the involved family member. Just do this one as a favor and chock it up to getting the experience of designing a good web site. Let the Aunt pay for the hosting provider costs. You might try to recapture the cost of Adobe CS4 (I just checked Adobe web site and it is $1799) from your Aunt but I would not.

start with telling her how much it would cost as a commercial site - i.e. how much you would charge someone who isn't family and go from there ... let us know how it turns out!

Yeah will do. I'm actually aiming at just getting enough to grab a high end macbook; at the moment my computer isn't quite suited to CS4 and the website is going to involve quite a bit of maintenance as my Aunt gets different jobs to put up there. Thanks for all the input, Lawrence

www.workingirls.co.uk For what it's worth, I've found that people are all over the map regarding what they expect to pay for any service, not just web design services. We've learned the hard way that a "reasonable" fee for one client can be a real bargain or highway robbery for another. Since then we make it a point to discuss pricing soon after we know the scope of the project. We can always adjust if necessary and don't make anyone mad in the process...especially if it's family! :) Lastly, what is your time worth? $25 / hour? $50 / hour? You can start here for estimating and just stick to the price for the entire project unless they throw a lot more work your way. I hope this helps! Greg

As you don't use CSS ( or xhtml for that matter ) then I would base your charges on the low end of the scale. As it is not accepted practice to charge your clients for your learning time, then it would really be a "family" price - just charge for the software that you had to buy and the hosting costs for the site. Your site is not valid for HTML, CSS or accessibility (WAI) as it really should be for business sites, especially taking the Disability Discrimination Act provisions for web sites into consideration. Your aunt would be liable should there be any complaints. There is a lot of help on this site to guide you towards producing workman like sites ie. sites that work, as well as looking pretty.
