Does putting the popular search terms of the day on your homepage help your ranking?

For example, 'new postage rates' is listed as one of the top ten search words today on google trends. In light of this, I put on our homepage, " we're not raising our S&H despite 'new postage rates' ". Is this one way to optomize your site?

Yes and no. If the trendy word has been typed in 3000 times in the last 60 days you would think it would be a good word to have on your page. But what if 300,000,000 web pages are using that same phrase? Then it wouldn't really help you get more traffic.
You can take a look at www.wordtracker.com for more information on keyword phrases.
But please understand, page rank is NOT dependent on keyword phrases but ONLY on incoming links from other web sites to your site.

i dont this it will help a lot unless you have that keyword fitted perfectly into any content, if you want to use that particular keyword, i suggest you using the keyword into some related content. you can give it a try.
