Life after Front Page - 5/11/2009 16:44:35
My host is discontinuing to support my Front Page sites due to security issues and that MS is no longer supporting FP. I'll probably be switching to Dreamweaver unless someone can suggest something else. I have several sites that use an MS Access database and I am used to using the FP DRW in concert with the Spooky diet and some asp/visual basic code. Will I be able to use MS Access and asp/visual basic with Dreamweaver? How difficult will the transition be?

Have you tried expression web. This is the new frontpage. You should be able to move everything over easier then dreamweaver. Expression Web is a microsoft product it essentially took the place of frontpage. http://www.microsoft.com/expression/

I haven't tried ms expression, but it seems to be quite a bit less expensive than dreamweaver. Is there much of a learning curve re using it with databases e.g. having a form post to a database; displaying the results; editing; etc

You will need server side script to do the form posting. In FrontPage the extensions handled it but in expression web you will need a script. Many are free. Doesn't Dreamweaver also need server side scripts to handle form mail? You will find a small learning curve learning Expression Web but it is a super program and I highly recommend it. There are some good video tutorials explaining how to move your frontpage web to expression web. Go HERE for some really good Expression Web help.

It really has been a small learning curve for me. It makes you think everything must be asp.net, but you can do asp as well. It has a lot of extra features, master pages, etc, but they didn't forget people that are so use to frontpage (templates, etc)

You are not limited to asp.net when using Expression Web. It handles PHP just fine. I am using EW on many sites, none of them use asp.net.

crosscreek & treetopsranch, thanks to both of you for your help. You are talking me into EW. My primary concern is with ease of inputing, extracting, and displaying data to and from an Access database. For someone like myself who has just a "working knowledge" of asp and visual basic, it was handy to use the DRW tools in Front Page. Does EW have something similiar? Also is there a good migration path for database stuff going from FP2003 to EW?

Now that I'm sold on Expressions Web 2.0, I have one other question. I can buy it from Microsoft or other retailers for about $300 or I can buy what is called the 'Academic' version for about $79. The sellers are saying that the academic version is a full version, same as the higher priced one. So is this a no brainer, i.e. go with the cheaper version, or is there any reason to go with the retail version?

The academic version requires that you have proof of school attendance. You should be able to get a upgrade version for 99.95 HERE

Thanks again treetopsranch. I went ahead and followed your advice. You should ask MS for a commission.
