Newby has Navigation bar problems - 5/19/2009 15:30:13
I am a newby to web administration having taken on www.dbtruckracing.co.uk without any handover. Utilising FP 2000 and FTP FileZilla I have got my head around transfer of the existing httpdocs folders, publishing, simple text & jpg's links. However the existing home page navigation bars (text size & colour) have become slightly corrupt but still work thank goodness but some buttons are red some are now blue. I have tried every option I can find under FP 2000 navigation but can't seem to access the existing set up for these links, text size or colour. Anyone any ideas what I am doing wrong? GHDirect

I think all will be well if you re upload all the files in your "_themes/copy-of-sky/" folder. Looks like some images are missing there. Anytime you're working with FrontPage components like this, you would be better off using Frontpage http publishing instead of FTP. Just doing a regular FrontPage publish would probably fix this as well.

Thanks for the tip. I am to understand that since the publishing of the original web pages under FP the Web provider has moved to a Unix server base. Therefore FP server extensions are no longer supported. I must therefore use Filezilla (FTP). I did try to publish using FP but it hung up just into the transfer.

Did this problem arise immediately following the switch?

The web site appeared to work when I took it over but I know its content not been updated for months. I believe during this static period was when the Service Provider moved to Unix. Therefore when I came along trying to use FP as a novice I stepped into a bowl of treacle.

2 possibilities come to mind. 1 is that Unix is case sensitive for file names, and Windows is not. That means a reference to File.gif will not work on Unix if the actual name is file.gif. That will work on Windows, however. I doubt that's the case, but it's possible. The other possibility is that some files in the _themes folder have been deleted from the server. Have you tried to re upload everything in that folder? Also, I'm assuming your local version of the site is working properly. Yes?

I take your point on file names and will double check them. I can confirm locally things work but links fail when published to site using the FTP process. The most recent example being I placed a link called "Brands Hatch" lower part of the index page. This linked to another page of JPG's capturing some Brands Hatch action. Locally it all works fine. I published the httpdocs along with the associated jpg folders using FTP but these new links error and thats the state I left it in past couple of weeks. I am coming to a conclusion that FP2000 verses Unix is not suited. I have just purchased Expression Web. Maybe if I locally load existing httpdocs into that, check links etc and then publish using FTP it might fix things. Regards

Another choice may be to wipe everything out and publish again from scratch.

Having slept on it, I have come to the same conclusion. To date I always over write the file not delete then re-instate. Along with httpdocs & httpsdocs the server also contains loads of other folders (various dates & titles) ie Private, Statistics, Subdomains, cqi-bin, bin, anon ftp to name some. I do not understand what these do or whether they are relevant. So nervous to delete all. My basic knowledge tells me httpdocs should contain everything including any folders that supprt gifs and jpgs etc I have no idea what httpsdocs does or how it was created.

FrontPage server extensions work fine on Unix and Linux. Are you sure that your host can't install them? If so, you can open the site live in FP. Then you can rename the buttons and open a page. Then rename them back and open a page. That will fix your problem. You need FP extensions to do that, however.

Sorry but, publishing using FP and asking provider to support Server Extensions is not an option. This is my first encounter with a web space provider so I have no comparison with other providers or their support. Purple Cloud is the web space provider. They state in writing they no longer support Front Page server extensions and now use Unix. They suggest Front Page users should publish using an FTP and they offer FilleZilla as a FTP solution. They have a few FAQ and their help desk will not resolve local FP or publishing queries/ issues. Hence I am engaged in asking forums. Back to my last questions please. Any ideas what files can I delete with confidence before re-installing them using Filezilla.

It's not going to hurt to delete everything inside public_html and upload again.

Good news. I deleted all content with httpdocs and reloaded it from local PC using Filezilla and it works!!!!! I still have folders outside of httpdocs which may or may not be required titled:- httpsdocs, statistics, subdomain, cqi-bin, bin, anonftp. Unless you a confident these no longer have value I will leave them and get on with my next news update. Thanks for tips.
