Do I need to publish deptodoc.btr and doctodep.btr - 5/26/2009 18:30:21
My web site is www.edinphoto.org.uk. I update the site on my local PC, then publish the changes from time to time to the remote server. I used to publish my web site by requesting 'Publish' from FrontPage The program decided which pages had changed and so should be copied to the remote site. But now I've removed FrontPage Extensions from the site, so I can no longer publish this way. Instead, I'm keeping track of the folders in the site as I make changes to them on my local PC. Then, I'm using Filezilla to to copy these folders to the remote site, whenever I wish to publish the site. This seems to be working fine, so far as I can tell. However, I've noticed that there are two very large files on the web site. They are named deptodoc.btr and doctodep.btr. I've browsed the Internet to see what they are. They seem to be used in some way by FrontPage to index pages. What I'd like to know now is whether these pages are being changed when I update my web site, and if I should be asking Filezilla to copy the latest versions of these files to the remote site whenever I want to publish the site. (I've not been doing that to date, and the links all seem to be working OK when I view he live site on the Internet.) I hope somebody can advise me. Thanks for your help. Just one more point, in case it is relevant: FrontPage has some sort of tree structure that would allow me to record the relationship of different pages on my web site (e.g. when moving up and down a level) but I found it far too cumbersome to maintain this structure for a large site like mine, so I'm not using it. Instead, I am relying on the links between individual pages that I've set up on the site, and I'm not using general link commands such as 'move up a level'. I hope that all makes sense to you!

BTR is a file extension associated with FrontPage Binary-Tree Index. Guess if you are not using the tree index you could remove those files.

Hi DOn: Thanks for your quick and helpful reply. I've also found a file on the web site called linkinfo.btr. It is smaller than the other two, but I assume that one can go as well. Removing these three files would reduce the size of my site by about 45Mb or 2.5%. I think I'll wait a little while before I remove them, just in case anything goes wrong. But at least I know, now, that I don't have to go to the trouble of updating these files on the remote site when I publish changes to the site. Thanks again. - Peter.
