pmagas -> Marketing dilemma/concern (6/16/2009 15:22:06)

Hi, all! Ya'll might tell me to figure this out on my own - that's fair. But there's so much knowledge/insight out there, I thought I might just ask.

So here's the deal - I'm one of those 'generalist' people and I haven't quite decided what I want to do when I grow up (I'm only 48 - figure I have another 30 years before growing up - if I'm lucky!!)

I've been in accounting forever - and as such have managed computer networks, systems, etc. I've worked with small businesses and have worn just about every hat out there. I helped my husband start (and grow) his real estate company until a couple of years ago. (I saw the writing on the wall and went back to accounting for a while.) When working with my husband, I stumbled into web design and programming (using the word very loosely - I know enough to be dangerous and usually can make things work.) I've always loved to sew but could never figure out how to make money doing it.

So I have websites about real estate, accounting, website design and my little eShop where I sell the little things I sew. I can't seem to stick with just one - maybe it's that generalist thing or maybe I lack focus. But each one brings in some income and I hope that someday one (or all?) might be enough that I could leave accounting again and be my own boss.

I was thinking about starting up a blog (sort of personal) and trying to tie everything together rather than being these four or five different people. This came up when working on my LinkedIn account - who do I want the world to see there? All of the sides of me or just one? Then I was also thinking that it might make sense to set up my little company with a more generic name so that I can set up one LLC and one back account rather than going into several different ones as things continue to grow. And have one company name with which to answer the phone - you know something like 'Penny's Creations' instead of answering 'hair scrunchies' when they're looking for help with the real estate website.

So is this just stupid? Has anyone else run into this sort of thing? Any words of wisdom for me?

Thanks in advance to you all, for your help and insight (even if you say something I don't want to hear.)

Cheers!
Penny

I've been thinking about this. Why not have a parent company and set up separate brands that look similar for each of your sites? Then put your parent company name close to your site name in all of the contact info?

Something like this.

WeSellStLouis.com, a devision of SiteKick.

Thank you, Thomas!! I think that's perfect. It sounds like it will fit all the different parts of what I'm doing. And I don't really have to substantially change the 'organization' of the different pieces I have in place. From a business standpoint, I can set up SiteKick and each of the 'pieces' can be their own little profit centers. [:D]

I can organize my SiteKick site to pull in the others and it will flow from there. Excellent!! I've been trying to brainstorm and do all those creative things now for a couple of weeks to pull it together - you hit it for me. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Cheers and Happy Friday!!
Penny
